Investigation

Just a short walk from the steady hum of trains along the Ohio River, the Ross House rises from Belmont Street with a quiet defiance. Its brick walls and weathered windows witnessed well over a century of change. Built in 1895, this elegant yet unassuming home has been many things to Bellaire: a private residence, an antique-filled curiosity, a storage space, and even an escape room. But through each transformation, it has carried with it an unshakable reputation. It sits atop a ley line, a vein of unseen energy coursing beneath the earth. Some visitors even  call this building one of Ohio’s most haunted locations.

From its earliest days, the house was tied to lives both private and peculiar. In 1948, it was purchased by Fred and Marie Gretros, a couple whose guarded demeanor earned them few friends but much speculation. They raised chinchillas here, kept to themselves, and, according to whispers, harbored a strange energy that seemed to permeate the walls. After Fred’s passing in 1975 and Marie’s in the late 1980s, the property passed into new hands, briefly serving as a rental before becoming part of a family business. Through it all, certain rooms developed reputations, spaces where the air felt heavy, the light dimmed without reason, and mirrors seemed to hold more than just a reflection.

Today, the Ross House stands as both a historical relic and a magnet for the unexplained. Visitors speak of sudden cold spots, phantom footsteps, and batteries drained within minutes. Some encounters are unnerving like the tall, shadow figure known as “Alfred” has been seen in doorways and basement corners, his presence oppressive and unwelcoming. Others feel oddly protective, such as the spectral woman said to make female guests feel at ease, or the playful little girl who leaves behind the scent of daisies. In certain rooms, especially the so-called “Red Room” and the old chinchilla space, knocks, voices, and even scratches across the spine have been reported.

Whether drawn by the rumored ley line, the lingering spirits of past residents, or energies carried in by antiques once sold here, the Ross House remains a place where history and the paranormal intertwine. To walk its halls is to feel watched but not with malice, with a presence that will not be ignored. And for those who dare to linger, it has a way of ensuring you never truly leave without taking something, seen or unseen.

Following a short drive of just over an hour into Bellaire, Ohio, we arrived at the Ross House around 6:00 PM, ready to spend the night exploring its mysteries. Though closer than most of our investigation sites, the home carried a presence that demanded attention. This was an investigation not just of paranormal activity, but of what lingers when the past refuses to stay buried.

From the moment we stepped inside, the house seemed aware of us. Subtle shifts in atmosphere hinted at unseen eyes observing, and early recordings from motion-activated cameras captured activity that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. The Ross House was quietly, insistently alive.

Upstairs, energies varied from protective to playful, drawing our focus in different directions. Meanwhile, the basement radiated a stronger, almost urgent presence, suggesting stories that were eager to be told. Even distant, watchful presences were felt, silently overseeing the activity without revealing everything at once.

Over the course of the night, until approximately 3:00 AM, it became clear that the Ross House was more than a location to investigate, it was a place that invited engagement. What awaited us promised not only unexplained phenomena, but connections to history, curiosity, and voices that refused to be ignored.

Below, we present the evidence, impressions, and interpretations from our investigation, capturing what the Ross House revealed, both seen and unseen, to those willing to pay attention.

As always, we invite you to share your own thoughts or interpretations, and reach out with feedback or your own experiences. We encourage open discussion and are always grateful to hear from others as we continue to explore the unexplained.

As always, you have been warned, some of this is not for the faint of heart and can be slightly explicit:

Pre-Investigation Walkthrough

While much of the Ross House presented a welcoming and almost museum-like calm, there were certain spaces that carried an undeniable shift in atmosphere. The upstairs hallway and adjoining bedrooms, in particular, seemed to hold onto an energy that weighed heavier than the rest of the home. One room, connected to reports of Alfred, carried a dense and almost watchful presence, while elsewhere the sensation leaned toward something gentler, possibly tied to Marie Gretros, whose story remains deeply woven into the house. Interestingly, as we stepped beyond these thresholds, the air seemed to lighten again, suggesting that whatever energies remain here are bound to specific spaces within the property.

We also allowed the house itself to work as part of the investigation, setting out cameras and recorders to monitor while we stepped away (during breaks, moments we gathered ourselves, or simply investigated other areas of the building). These static sessions produced a variety of results. Some were explainable, such as our own foot traffic throughout the house or our movements activating the motion-activated lights, but others defied easy dismissal. Among them were repeated knocks on walls, subtle light anomalies, and even shadows. These layers of energy were not confined solely to the house, either; the connected furniture store also seemed to carry its own intensity, suggesting the possibility of spiritual crossover between the spaces.

Photos:

  • This SLS image was taken down the hallway next to the Master Bedroom. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to investigate here but that was more so due to the fact we were never really pulled in that direction. We could not properly attempt to recreate this or debunk it so at this point, the appearance of a person standing inside the threshold of the doorway would just be left as unexplainable.

  • The images below are of Peggy, the doll in the parlor. At first she was sitting upright on the right side but at the end of the evening she had moved to the left side of the couch seemingly on her own. The image below shows where the doll was placed during our walkthrough on the top portion while the image on the bottom section shows where we found her during our clean up period.

Video 1 – Walkthrough 1:

  • While there was nothing outwardly out of place or anything worthy of analyzing further, simply the beauty of the antique and period appropriate furnishings all throughout the house. One thing to note here, however, is the location of the doll named Peggy in the Parlor. Later in the night, as we were packing up the doll was in a completely different location on the couch as if she moved from one side to the other.

Video 1 – Walkthrough 1:

  • We captured some drone footage showing the Ross House, the neighboring buildings and properties, and even the surrounding town of Bellaire, Ohio.

Kitchen

The kitchen served as our equipment room, and while we didn’t explicitly investigate this space, we kept careful tabs on it throughout the night. The room carried an energy that was impossible to ignore. According to reports, someone is said to reside in the bathroom within the kitchen space, and we observed activity that suggested their presence. The bathroom door opened and moved on its own, not just once but twice. While the door openings themselves were not captured on camera, one instance of the door shifting after being opened was recorded on our devices.

In addition to the door movement, a shadow was seen moving across the chairs toward the bathroom, further emphasizing that something – or someone – was active in the space. Even amidst our setup and equipment, the kitchen seemed to hold a distinct awareness, as though someone quietly observed and interacted with us throughout the night.

Photos:

  • This still of a video showed the door as it shifted behind the investigator.

  • A shadow could be seen moving across the room, toward the bathroom door. This occurred twice on our camera, one time it even activated our motion activated device.

Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:

  • Throughout this entire clip, the door could be seen moving behind the investigator who was not disturbed or even noticed it as his back was turned away from it.

Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:

  • Just in front of the chairs, a shadow could be seen moving towards the bathroom door at :03.

Video 3 – Trail Camera 3:

  • A shadow was spotted here in the same location just as the motion activated light was activated as if it picked up this motion at :01.
  • At :06, another light anomaly could be seen moving away from the bathroom door toward the room’s exit.

Video 4 – Trail Camera 4:

  • There was a light noticed moving toward the bathroom door at :07. This occurred just before the door physically opened the second time but unfortunately the camera had already been activated at that point and did not record long enough to capture this actually occurring.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom of the Ross House is not an overly large space, but it carries a presence that feels far bigger than its physical size. Despite its modest layout, the room has long been connected to stories of unusual activity, including claims of a portal existing within its walls. From the moment we entered, the air felt denser here than in other areas of the house, almost as though the room itself was layered with energy waiting to be uncovered.

As our investigation unfolded, we began to suspect that the claims of a portal were not just folklore. The Spirit Box through the Portal provided direct and intelligent responses that pointed to this room being central to communication. At times, voices overlapped and shifted rapidly, as though multiple energies were vying for attention in the same space. Knocks, fluctuations in our equipment, and notable communication reinforced the idea that this room may serve as a crossing point, an area where energies can move more freely between worlds. The intensity here far outweighed the size of the space, leaving us with the impression that the master bedroom is more than just a room; it may be a threshold.

Photos:

  • Inside the Master Bedroom, the SLS camera captured a figure on the bed. While the mapping clearly represented the investigator seated in the back corner on the chair, a secondary figure appeared directly across from him. As with other SLS captures, we were unable to recreate or explain this phenomenon at the time. Given the activity in the room, including devices lighting up on the bed, it appears that this presence was actively occupying the space while communicating with us.

  • A thermal image of a colder energy was seen behind the investigator who was situated atop the bed. This imagery can be described as an upper body and head with shoulders and head distinguishable.

  • There were a few light anomalies captured during these time frames which we could not conclude were dust particles or bugs. These also seemed to coincide with some other type of activity, whether it was an investigator feeling as though someone was standing in the hallway or hearing the creak of footsteps coming from out where the camera was placed.

  • A shadow could be seen moving past the chair, toward the dresser. This was captured in a video but we also wanted to document it via a still image as well.

  • That same video produced some odd lights but more strikingly something appearing in the mirror. We’re unsure exactly what it is as it flashes at the very end of the video but our documentation here helps pull it out through a still image. The upper image is a full view of the object we noticed. The second image is zoomed in on the anomaly while the third image is a different view of the mirror with nothing in it for comparison.

  • We utilized AI to help re-create what our sensitives felt the woman looked like below.

Recording 1 – EVP 1:

  • While our initial opportunity to communicate here came more in the form of our sensitives getting touched, the main experience which occurred early on were phantom footsteps. This was heard by the team in its entirety and was captured here at :11.

Recording 2 – EVP 2:

  • After our sensitive investigators felt the name Maggie or Margie was present, this paired up with the sensation of a more motherly feel as this entity seemed to come into the room to check on the only female in our group and ensure she was okay. This was likened to a madame making her way around to check on her girls back in the day of brothels. This woman was described with black hair tied back in a loose bun while wearing early 1900’s garb.
  • At the time, we thought it may be Marie but this was not entirely positive at the time. However, during our review this identity became more apparent that the “M” and “G” were in fact those of Marie Gretros.
  • Following these descriptions, there was the creaking of floorboards as if someone was walking out in the hall toward the kids room, located down the hallway to the right. This was heard at :18.

Recording 2E – EVP 2 Enhanced:

  • This previous clip was enhanced and the footsteps could be heard at :18.

Recording 3 – Portal 1:

  • Our communication never seemed to be completely open as we seemed to keep getting stymied in one way or another. This first contact of an almost irritated “Go away,” heard at :09, was a perfect example of this.
  • The Ovilus followed this with more content and curious intelligence with ‘Our’ and ‘Group’ and ‘Black’ at :40. All three words pertained to our team as we were a small group which wore  black shirts.
  • As two investigators sat and one stood, we noted this as to not mistake this sound for anything unusual. At 1:15, we heard ‘Stand’ which coincided with this timeframe.

Recording 4 – Portal 2:

  • We discussed the footsteps we heard (and previously documented above) and decided to simply ask them directly if this was them walking around. At :05, we heard “Not at all.”
  • As we showed some of our excitement, they seemed to want to join in as we heard a confirmation of “Pretty cool” at :22.
  • The Ovilus once again added to this with ‘Judge’ at :35 and ‘Cow’ at :55.

Recording 5 – Portal 3:

  • As we attempted to continue our conversation, we asked them if they were curious about us or if they did not like us being here in their house. Instead of directly asking, they told us to “Sit” at :23 as if offering us a seat and welcoming us.
  • We followed that up with another question tying into our visit and asked if they minded if we were sitting in this room. We were told “No” emphatically as it was repeated twice, at :48 and :51.

Recording 6 – Portal 4:

  • Our group was beginning to feel as though they wanted us to venture elsewhere but our questioning of which room to go to was unresponsive so we asked if they could simply make a noise in another room and we would follow it there to continue our conversation. Instead, we were told to “Go back” at :05, although we were unsure what that meant.
  • With that, we asked once again for confirmation if they preferred us to go elsewhere. This time, we heard a response of “Yup” at :44.
  • Hearing that response, although simple, we asked if they could tell us where to go. We should have been more specific and added inside the house to that question as we heard “Go home” at 1:09 and “Outside” at 1:20.

Recording 7 – Portal 5:

  • We didn’t want to give in just yet and continued to ask more questions but we seemingly got our answer already as they repeated it back to us, starting at :01 with “Out there.”
  • To demonstrate their sincerity here, “Out” was heard two more times at :23 and :27.

Recording 8 – Portal 6:

  • As we packed up to move on and head to another room, we heard “Thanks” at :08.

Recording 9 – Walking 1:

  • We decided to feel out our next location so we ran the recorder while doing so. Although there was nothing paranormal captured, our sensitives could be heard remarking how they sensed changes down the hallways with chills and even being touched in the kids room which ultimately was our next stop.

Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:

  • The K2 meter could be seen flickering throughout this clip.
  • In addition, at :06, a light anomaly could be seen moving into the doorway.

Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:

  • A strange light was seen here moving from the right side toward the doorway at :05.

Video 3 – Trail Camera 3:

  • Similar to the initial clip, the K2 meter could be seen flickering throughout.

Video 4 – Trail Camera 4:

  • At :02, the K2 meter spiked which paired up with a light anomaly moving from it.

Video 5 – Trail Camera 5:

  • Toward the right side of the hallway, a strange moving light could be seen at :02.

Video 6 – Trail Camera 6:

  • At the right side of the hallway, a light anomaly was seen moving until it disappeared. This occurred at :02.

Video 7 – Trail Camera 7:

  • A light was seen moving from the floor down the hall toward the right at :03.

Video 8 – Trail Camera 8:

  • The K2 meter could be seen lighting throughout this clip.

Video 9 – Trail Camera 9:

  • Strangely enough, immediately at the start of this clip, the camera seemed to shake as if someone was bouncing up and down or right past it.
  • Following that moment, a puff of dust could be seen moving past the camera at :03 as if solidifying the prior thought that someone was creating enough force to push all of this into the air. To add to this, our audio devices were not alerted. If a person created that much force, the audio tools would have activated as well.

Video 10 – Trail Camera 10:

  • There was a light anomaly moving toward the door at about :03.

Video 11 – Trail Camera 11:

  • This clip packs a lot of different aspects into one short timeframe. At first, :03, a light could be seen moving in the mirror against the wall.
  • Next to the chair, on the left side of the room, a dark shadow can be seen moving at about :06.
  • At :09, a strange traveling light could be seen moving out of the room.
  • During the very last frame of this clip, an odd object could be seen in the mirror fixated to the back wall. There are not nearly enough attributes to this to attempt to figure out what it is.
  • Put all of these, extremely odd, actions together is it possible that we saw the supposed portal undergo some type of activation?

Video 12 – Handheld Camera 1:

  • Early on, footsteps could be heard creaking here, then again at :14.

Video 13 – Handheld Camera 2:

  • At about :18, there were more footsteps heard as we noticed them in the clip.

Video 14 – Handheld Camera 3:

  • This first communication of “Go away,” was heard at:02.
  • The Ovilus produced ‘Our’ and ‘Group’ and ‘Black’ all at :33 which pertained to our team.
  • At 1:08, the Ovilus gave us ‘Stand’ which coincided with an investigator standing.

Video 15 – Handheld Camera 4:

  • We discussed the footsteps we heard and asked them if this was them walking around. At :04, we heard “Not at all.”
  • They seemed to want to join in with our excitement as we heard a confirmation of “Pretty cool” at :23.
  • The Ovilus added to this with ‘Judge’ at :34 and ‘Cow’ at :57.

Video 16 – Handheld Camera 5:

  • We asked them if they were curious about us or if they did not like us being here in their house and they told us to “Sit” at :4  as if offering us a seat and welcoming us.
  • After we asked if they minded if we were sitting in this room we were told “No” emphatically as it was repeated twice, at :49 and :52.

Video 17 – Handheld Camera 6:

  • We asked if they could make a noise in another room and we would follow it there to continue our conversation. Instead, we were told to “Go back” at :12.
  • With that, we asked for confirmation if they preferred us to go elsewhere and heard “Yup” at :59.
  • We asked if they could tell us where to go. We should have been more specific and added inside the house to that question as we heard “Go home” at 1:24 and “Outside” at 1:35.

Video 18 – Handheld Camera 7:

  • The former response was repeated back to us, starting at :19 with “Out there.”
  • “Out” was heard two more times at :23 and :46.

Video 19 – Handheld Camera 8:

  • As we packed up to move on and head to another room, we heard “Thanks” at :04.

Kids Room

The Kids’ Room at the Ross House is a smaller, more modest space, but it holds an unmistakable charm that feels different from the rest of the upstairs. With its simple design and quiet corner location, the room seems to carry a lighter energy, as though it still remembers the presence of a child. While it doesn’t press down on you like some of the heavier spaces in the house, there is a lingering sense that something (or someone) occupies it with curiosity rather than malice.

During our time in this room, we experienced what felt like the presence of a child more interested in play than conversation. Unlike other areas where the Spirit Box or Portal gave us voices and responses, here the interaction came through movement and manipulation of our devices. A flashlight set out for validation flickered on and off as though being toyed with, and equipment placed around the room responded in ways that suggested engagement rather than coincidence. It was as if the child preferred games to words, choosing to announce their presence through small but intentional acts. This playful energy gave the kids’ room a distinct personality of its own, reinforcing the idea that the Ross House is home to more than just one kind of spirit.

Photos:

  • This is a still of the flashlight going on and off we pulled from the cameras to document the activity in a different manner.

  • The image below documents another unseen moment of a picture being knocked over although no one saw it occur. While we were packing up we noticed this and had to look back in our walkthrough footage to ensure it was not like this the entire night.

Recording 1 – EVP 1:

  • While it seemed to take a little time to get settled in and have anyone in the room step forward, even enough to alter the atmosphere, we eventually heard a knocking noise at :07. This was following us questioning if anyone could make a noise if there was anyone here with us.
  • Only eight seconds later, at :15, there was a movement felt on the bed as one of the investigators sat on it. It was as if someone was shifting just behind him.

Recording 1E – EVP 1 Enhanced:

  • The previous knocking noise could be heard, enhanced, at :07.

Recording 2 – EVP 2:

  • Early on in this clip was one of the limited verbal communications in this room as the Ovilus produced the word ‘Swim’ at :04.
  • The flashlight turned on at :17 as we tried to set some type of communication standard but incredibly, the Ovilus produced the word ‘Bright’ at :24 in a clear connection with the burst of light the flashlight produced.
  • After we asked them to turn the light back off so we could attempt communication, it shut off at :31.

Recording 3 – EVP 3:

  • The name ‘Grace’ was shown through the Ovilus at :05.
  • As we asked directly if this was their name, there was a knocking noise heard at :27.
  • At :57, the Ovilus again produced a word: ‘Dress.’

Recording 4 – EVP 4:

  • Prior to this clip, our sensitives began feeling a tingling sensation in their back, close to their shoulders.
  • At :07, a strange noise was heard here but not in person. This was reminiscent of a cat’s meow or a baby crying.

Recording 4E – EVP 4 Enhanced:

  • At :07, the enhanced version of the cat’s meow or a baby crying noise was heard here but not in person.

Recording 5 – EVP 5:

  • We explained that they could continue touching the flashlight and that they made us happy by doing so. At :35, as if a sign of appreciation, the Ovilus produced ‘Thank you.’

Recording 6 – EVP 6:

  • Prior to this clip, we had discussed that we would move on if no one wanted to speak to us and the flashlight jumped on and off multiple times.
  • We explained that we wanted to play a game and see if they wanted to play with us. There were three different times that they returned our knocks and this could be heard first at :25 then again, in a quick pair, at :42 and :46. These knocks all emanated from out in the hallway which prompted us to head out there and attempt to connect with whoever was making these noises.

Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:

  • At :09, the flashlight could be seen turning on as if someone was playing with it.

Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:

  • The flashlight once again turned on at :07..

Video 3 – Trail Camera 3:

  • Under the chair, there was an odd light that could be seen immediately in this clip.

Video 4 – Trail Camera 4:

  • Just above the bed, more light anomalies could be seen at :07.

Video 5 – Trail Camera 5:

  • The flashlight was on to start his clip and, at :07, it shut off.

Video 6 – Trail Camera 6:

  • At :03, the flashlight turned on.

Video 7 – Trail Camera 7:

  • Once again, the flashlight turned on at :02.

Video 8 – Trail Camera 8:

  • At :06, the flashlight could be seen turning on.

Video 9 – Handheld Camera 1:

  • We eventually heard a knocking noise at :11.
  • At :19, there was a movement felt on the bed as one of the investigators sat on it. It was as if someone was shifting just behind him.

Video 10 – Handheld Camera 2:

  • The Ovilus produced the word ‘Swim’ at :01.
  • The flashlight turned on at :08 as we tried to set some type of communication standard but incredibly, the Ovilus produced the word ‘Bright’ at :19 in connection with the light the flashlight produced.
  • We asked them to turn the light off so we could attempt communication, it shut off at :40.

Video 11 – Handheld Camera 3:

  • The flashlight turned on at :07.
  • The name ‘Grace’ was shown on the Ovilus at :12.
  • As we asked if this was their name, there was a knocking noise heard at :39.
  • At 1:05, the Ovilus again produced a word: ‘Dress.’

Video 12 – Handheld Camera 4:

  • At :17, a strange noise was heard here but not in person. This was reminiscent of a cat’s meow or a baby crying.

Video 13 – Handheld Camera 5:

  • The flashlight turned on at :03 after we asked if they were still with us then , at :13, it shut back off.
  • We explained that they could continue touching the flashlight and that they made us happy by doing so. At :1:01, as if a sign of appreciation, the Ovilus produced ‘Thank you.’

Video 14 – Handheld Camera 6:

  • We discussed that we would move on if no one wanted to speak to us and the flashlight jumped on and off at :03.
  • We explained that we wanted to play a game and see if they wanted to play with us. They returned our knock 1:05
  • At 2:13, the flashlight turned on as we discussed the sound.

Basement

The basement of the Ross House carries its own unique weight, with an atmosphere that feels markedly different from the floors above. At first, the back room in particular seemed to draw our attention, as though inviting us to spend more time in its shadows. The space itself is surprisingly tall for the age of the home, its stone-lined walls and open layout creating an environment that feels both grounded and unsettled. Local stories speak of a little girl said to linger here, and we even brought flowers in hopes of reaching her, yet her presence never made itself known to us.

Instead, our time in the basement unfolded in unexpected ways. After being pulled downstairs by noises we could not ignore, we conducted an Estes Method session that revealed communication not with a child, but with three distinct energies: Ed, Sam, and Johnny. All three names, astonishingly, connect directly to the Webb Mine fire disaster, an event rooted in the history of Bellaire. Even more striking, Alfred, the stern presence so often associated with the Ross House, was also found listed among the miners who perished in that same disaster. During the session, their responses carried a tone that felt both curious and urgent, as if these men were eager for the chance to finally be heard. The clarity, timing, and consistency of these communications left no doubt that what we encountered was intelligent activity.

This revelation added a striking contrast: where stories had long spoken of a child lingering in the basement, it seemed instead to be the voices of the miners, tied to one of Bellaire’s darkest tragedies, that came forward. Rather than confirming folklore, the basement offered us a direct and intelligent connection to history itself, marking it as one of the most compelling locations within the Ross House.

Photos:

  • There were a few moments similar to this attached video still of the flashlight turning on and off as a way of communication.

  • Thanks to AI, we managed to take our sensitives’ descriptions of the two men we believe we connected with in the Basement. These are simply interpretations and not what they actually looked like but they do give a good representation of their appearance. The image on the left is depicting Johnny and the one to the right is showing Sam.

Recording 1 – Walking:

  • We felt a strong pull toward the basement after our time spent up on the second floor. As we approached the basement door, we noted that it had once again opened for us. Whether this was from some kind of air movement or other relative anomaly, we cannot say, but it is worth noting that there is a distinct latch and tightness to the door in the door frame which makes it seem difficult to believe that it is simply airflow opening this door.
  • As we began to settle into the basement, our sensitives could once again feel the tingling sensation in his back which prompted us to get set and start right away.

Recording 2 – EVP 1:

  • We heard a soft whistling noise at :03 but didn’t have a chance to follow this up as the next experience certainly altered our interests.
  • The group noticed a soft whispering sound in person and, upon our review, we noticed it once again and even enhanced it. While it’s still very difficult to understand what they’re saying, we can confidently state that this voice came out of thin air as if manifesting from nothing but the energy in this space. At about :04, the whispering could be heard here. We believe that it is coming through in the form of “My house” as if whoever this is claims ownership over the building.

Recording 2E – EVP 1 Enhanced:

  • At about :04, the enhanced whispering of “My house” could be heard here.

Recording 3 – EVP 2:

  • While we had some flashlight communication prior to this, as well as physical sensations with our sensitives, the Ovilus began to provide us with some incredible information beginning with the name ‘Ed’ at :09.
  • Another name, ‘Johnny,’ was provided by the Ovilus at :20.
  • We likely asked too open of a question next, asking if their name was either Ed or Johnny, and the flashlight flickered on then back off at :50.
  • As we commented on this, as well as a sensitive being touched, the second flashlight jumped on then back off at :56.
  • After refining our question, we asked if this was Johnny and the flashlight turned on, as if a yes response, at 1:37.

Recording 4 – ESTES 1:

  • While we felt there was more to be heard and more communication to be had inside the basement, we felt the silence may be better than having the crackle of the spirit box echoing around in the stone clad basement. We proceeded with a lengthy ESTES method which started off rather quietly and the listener didn’t even hear anything come through until about five minutes in, however, upon our review it seems as though there was communication coming through, just very silent. This all began at :11 after the group introduced themselves as we heard a greeting of “Hello?”
  • This continued with a rather blunt question of “What?” repeated at :13 and :15 as if we were disturbing whoever was down here.
  • The Ovilus then gave us the word ‘Group’ at :17, an obvious reference to our group visiting them, or so we thought.
  • Ovilus communication continued with ‘Thought’ and ‘Remote’ at :27 which also paired up with Spirit Box communication in the form of “Wait” as if someone was telling the group of them to wait their turn to speak instead of speaking over one another.
  • We were told “Come” at :28. This may have also been whoever was leading these energies to tell another to come and step forward to speak with us, as if it was their turn.

Recording 5 – ESTES 2:

  • The unheard communication continued here, after a pause in communication from our side, as we were told to “Talk?” at :06 then a question of “Well?” at :09 after we didn’t speak fast enough for them.
  • This impatience was heard again at :43 with “Talk” then again with “We’re waiting” at :53.
  • As we explained that we weren’t there to harm them or move them on and to simply speak with them, we heard an apology with “I’m sorry” at :56.

Recording 6 – ESTES 3:

  • We seemed to be greeted all over again in this timeframe. Perhaps a different energy stepped forward as we heard “Hello?” at :06 then “Hi” repeated at :09 and :14.
  • After we tried to reset, and reintroduced ourselves, we heard “Liar” at :20 but we’re unsure how this fit in unless it was one energy speaking to another.

Recording 7 – ESTES 4:

  • At this point, we finally began to hear the communication and were able to verbalize it to the group. This began with them trying to get our attention with “Hey” at :18 and :24.
  • We thanked them for stepping forward to speak to us and heard a blunt “Not you” at :31 and again at :34.
  • We apologized and began to think they wanted to speak to our other investigator but again we heard “Not you” at :55. It seemed that, once again, these energies may have been speaking to each other than us as none of this made sense in the moment and continued to counteract once another.
  • As we attempted to speak once more and figure out who they wanted to speak with, we finally heard “You” at 1:05 and again at 1:19.
  • The name “Edward” came through at 1:22 matching up with what the Ovilus produced earlier in the basement.
  • A cry for help ended this clip at 1:54, unfortunately not heard in the moment.

Recording 8 – ESTES 5:

  • We asked who we were speaking with and heard, at first, a simple “Her” at :13 but then an actual name in the phrase “It was John” at :22.

Recording 9 – ESTES 6:

  • Once again, either to solidify the previous response or to gain a new answer, we asked who we were speaking with and, at :10, we heard “Sam.”
  • We thanked them and gave a warm greeting to which we heard “Welcome” at :20.
  • After a pause, we were told “Out” at :57 and “Johnny” at 1:06.
  • This was followed by an unsettling phrase of “He had a knife” at 1:10.
  • We asked what the knife was for and heard “My” at 1:39 and “Friend” at 1:43 as if saying the knife was for Johnny who is seemingly Sam’s friend.

Recording 10 – ESTES 7:

  • To follow all of this, we asked if Sam was down here and who we were speaking with and instead heard “John” at :13 which we believe may have actually been the start of another conversation between the two entities and not necessarily an answer to our question.
  • The Ovilus then produced the word ‘Stand’ at :40 and ‘Pulled’ at :45.
  • We then heard a command of “Stand up” at :46 followed by “Johnny” at :52 as if this was once again Sam telling Johnny to stand.
  • As our sensitives felt the sensation that these energies were associated with the old fire station which was once situated across the street. Instead of any direct answer, we were instead told “It was” at :58 completed by the name “Johnny” at 1:01.
  • We were confused by this and asked if it was Johnny who used the box or was associated with the fire station and, at 1:26, the Ovilus produced ‘Castle.’
  • Our sensitives  again mentioned the fire house and we heard the word “Over” at 1:47. Whether this was in retaliation to the fire house being over across the street or that they wanted us to move or look over somewhere is still unknown.
  • The Ovilus did produce a pair of words ending this clip with ‘Paint’ and ‘Dark’ at 1:52. There were a few rooms with darker paint so it is possible that they were referring to “Over” in  a different room.

Recording 11 – ESTES 8:

  • After a pause to sort of re-group, we asked who was speaking to the investigator listening in with the headphones and the name “Johnny” was heard at :11.
  • The Ovilus then produced ‘Chief’ at :19, apparently to that same question although we’re not sure who this chief is unless it’s in reference to the fire house once again.
  • We then heard “I” at :26 but we’re beginning to believe it’s more along the lines of “Aye” as if a yes response or an old-time response to acknowledging a question or comment.
  • Following this, our sensitives once more felt that there was a tie to the fire station and we heard this “I” or “Aye” at 1:04 and repeated again at 1:12 as if agreeing with her.
  • The name “Sam” was again heard coming through the Spirit Box at 1:42, perhaps in reference to the fire station and even a chief?
  • Two odd phrases were then heard starting with “He hurt” at 1:47 and “I’ll be there” at 1:57 as if these energies were replaying some incident of someone getting hurt then being called to help? That’s a complete shot in the dark as it’s how we began to connect the dots here.

Recording 12 – ESTES 9:

  • We attempted to tie all this to our sensitive’s feelings regarding the firehouse so we asked Sam if he worked in the fire house. At first, we heard a greeting of “Hello” at :02 then the Ovilus produced ‘Eleven’ and ‘Slave’ at :16, although we’re not entirely sure how either of those tie in here with Sam or the fire house.
  • A cry for “Help” was heard at :18 and, as we asked if they needed help, the Ovilus produced the word ‘Pray’ at :44.
  • As we turned the question to respond to this communication, we asked if they would like us to pray for them but heard “Lost” twice, at 1:03 and 1:07. Our only thought here is that they were lost and that it was too late for any type of prayer.

Recording 13 – ESTES 10:

  • Our group talked amongst ourselves, specifically about Sam and John. They seemed to think this was rude as we heard “Excuse me” at :13. To note, this entire clip was not heard during our time in the basement, and only during review.
  • At :16, we were questioned with “Is that you?” then an unprompted “Work” at :18.
  • With that, we asked directly if they worked in the coal mine. At :28, we heard a response of “I did.”
  • As a confirmation, we heard “Me” at :31.
  • Unsure what the next two responses meant, we heard “Three” at 1:03 and “More” at 1:12. Our assumption is that there were perhaps three more energies down here with them.

Recording 14 – ESTES 11:

  • An unsettling communication occurred in this timeframe, beginning with a drawn out phrase of I killed John and the word knife repeated twice. “I killed” was heard at :02 then “John” was heard at :32 and the word “Knife” was captured at :36 and :39. This was all in response to us asking how we could help them. In the middle of this, we asked who they killed, which is where we got the name “John.”
  • We attempted to get confirmation of this as this is quite the serious accusation, but as we directly asked if Sam stabbed John, we heard a “No” at :49. Perhaps this was too specific and he did not stab him but killed him another way but we never got any other type of confirmation here.
  • We seemed to run out of our time and his patience as we were told to “Go” at 1:18, however, as we began to close down communication lines and pack up equipment, we heard “Wait” at 1:32.
  • As if they tried to keep our attention and convince us against leaving, we heard “Knife?” at 1:37 as if they tried to get the conversation back on track.

Recording 15 – ESTES 12:

  • Seemingly upset with us and not turning our attention back to that conversation, we were told “Good riddance” at :02.
  • We then heard an unprompted name of “Barbera” at :20 followed by another irritated “Fine” or “Find” ” at :55.

Recording 16 – ESTES 13:

  • This clip was another moment that was much too silent to be heard in person, rather this moment was only heard via our review beginning with “Child” at :01.
  • “John” was once again heard at :07 but we’re unsure if that’s in reference to John’s child or a child who was involved with John somehow.
  • A cry out of “Hey John” was then heard at :10 followed by “Found something” at :12 in the same excited tone.

Recording 17 – ESTES 14:

  • At :08, we heard “I” then a claim of “Murder” at :19 and finally the name “Johnny” at :56. While we were previously told that he did not stab John, it seems as though Sam was confessing to murdering him. Whether with a knife or not (as previously notated) was not mentioned.

Recording 18 – ESTES 15:

  • We asked if anyone was still with us and heard an odd response of “Did you hear that?” at :15
  • It was not confirmed, but with the previous coal mining accidents, is it possible that someone was still reacting to collapses or explosions?

Recording 19 – ESTES 16:

  • Although not heard in person, we did hear a claim of “People” and “Injured” at :06 and :09 respectively which could be tied into the previous clip in regards to the mines injuring, and ultimately killing, people.
  • As we closed out our time here, we wished them positivity and that they could find peace and we heard a warm response of “You too” at :34.

Video 1 – Handheld Camera 1:

  • We heard a soft whistling noise at :04 but didn’t have a chance to follow this up as the next experience certainly altered our interests.
  • The group noticed a soft whispering sound in person and, upon our review, we noticed it once again and even enhanced it. While it’s still very difficult to understand what they’re saying, we can confidently state that this voice came out of thin air as if manifesting from nothing but the energy in this space. At about :05, the whispering could be heard here. We believe that it is coming through in the form of “My house.”

Video 2 – Handheld Camera 2:

  • At :10 and :17, our sensitives backs began to tingle as they could be seen physically adjusting themselves.
  • We discussed these tingling sensations and what they could mean and, at :20, the flashlight turned on.
  • At :29, the Ovilus produced the name ‘Ed’ and the name  ‘Johnny’ at :40.
  • We asked if they were Ed or Johnny and the flashlight turned on at 1:10 then off right after.
  • As one of the investigators felt touched, the second flashlight turned on then back off at 1:16.
  • The first flashlight turned back on at 1:57 after we asked if their name was John or Johnny.
  • We asked if they could turn the light back off to which it shut off at 2:19.

Video 3 – Handheld Camera 3:

  • We explained the rules of the yes/no game and the flashlight turned on at :20 as if they agreed to these rules.
  • After asking if they could turn the light off, they actually made it brighter at :35.
  • Once more, we asked them to turn the light off, and this time they did so at :40.
  • It flashed once again, on and off, at :43.
  • We asked if they could turn the light on if only one person was talking to us and, at 1:28, one flashlight turned on then back off at 1:31 after we sked them to do so.
  • We attempted to describe the rules of the on/off communication technique but, at 1:51, it flashed on.
  • At 2:08, we heard shuffling footsteps behind us.
  • The flashlight turned back off at 2:13.
  • It flickered on and off once again at 2:18.
  • The Ovilus produced the word ‘Gag’ at 3:25 just as one of the sensitives felt touched on her back at 3:30.
  • We asked if they were touching her and, at 3:47, the flashlight turned on to signify a yes response.

Video 4 – Handheld Camera 4:

  • As we directly addressed Johnny, the flashlight turned on at :09.
  • At :25, the flashlight turned off after we asked them to do so.
  • We attempted to ask further questions but the flashlight simply flicked on and off at 1:05.
  • As we explained that we were struggling to speak with them, and if they were messing with us, the flashlight again flicked on and off at 1:09.
  • After we asked if they were a jokester, the flashlight flickered once more at 1:55.
  • We then asked if they were simply bored and the flashlight flickered yet again at 2:06.

Video 4 – Handheld Camera 5 (ESTES)::

  • Our sensitives began to feel a tingling sensation at :18 to start things off
  • The Ovilus then gave us the word ‘Group’ at :19, a reference to our group perhaps.
  • Ovilus communication continued with ‘Thought’ and ‘Remote’ at :29 which also paired up with Spirit Box communication with  “Wait.”.
  • At this point, we finally began to hear the communication and were able to verbalize it to the group. This began with them trying to get our attention with “Hey” at 3:28.
  • We thanked them for speaking to us and heard a blunt “Not you” at 3:35.
  • We apologized and began to think they wanted to speak to our other investigator but again we heard “Not you” at 4:23.
  • The name “Edward” came through at 4:25.
  • A cry for help ended this clip at 4:57.
  • We asked who we were speaking with and heard, at first, a simple “Her” at 5:46 but then an actual name in the phrase “It was John” at 5:55.
  • We asked who we were speaking with and, at 6:34, we heard “Sam.”
  • We thanked them and gave a warm greeting to which we heard “Welcome” at 6:45.
  • We were told “Out” at 7:20.
  • This was followed by an unsettling phrase of “He had a knife” at 7:27 and “Johnny” at 7:29.
  • We asked what the knife was for and heard “My” at 8:01 and “Friend” at 8:05.
  • We asked if Sam was down here and who we were speaking with and heard “John” at 9:02.
  • The Ovilus then produced the word ‘Stand’ at 9:29 and ‘Pulled’ at :9:34.
  • We then heard a command of “Stand up” at 9:35 followed by “Johnny” at 9:41.
  • As our sensitives felt that these energies were associated with the old fire station which was situated across the street. Instead of any direct answer, we were instead told “It was” at 9:47 completed by the name “Johnny” at 9:50.
  • We asked if it was Johnny who used the box or was associated with the fire station and, at 10:15, the Ovilus produced ‘Castle.’
  • Our sensitives mentioned the fire house and we heard the word “Over” at 10:38.
  • The Ovilus produced ‘Paint’ and ‘Dark’ at 10:41. There were a few rooms with darker paint so it is possible that they were referring to “Over” in  a different room.
  • We asked who was speaking to the investigator listening in with the headphones and the name “Johnny” was heard at 11:09.
  • The Ovilus then produced ‘Chief’ at 11:17, apparently to that same question.
  • We then heard “I” at 11:21 but we believe it’s more along the lines of “Aye” as if a yes response or an old-time response to acknowledging a question or comment.
  • Our sensitives once more felt that there was a tie to the fire station and we heard this “I” or “Aye” at 12:02 and repeated again at 12:31 as if agreeing with her.
  • The name “Sam” was again heard coming through the Spirit Box at 12:40, perhaps in reference to the fire station and even a chief?
  • Two odd phrases were then heard starting with “He hurt” at 12:45 and “I’ll be there” at 12:55 as if these energies were replaying some incident of someone getting hurt then being called to help?
  • We asked Sam if he worked in the fire house and heard “Hello” at 13:25 then the Ovilus produced ‘Eleven’ and ‘Slave’ at 13:39.
  • “Help” was heard at 13:43 and, as we asked if they needed help, the Ovilus produced the word ‘Pray’ at 16:04.
  • We asked if they would like us to pray but heard “Lost” twice, at 14:26 and 14:30.
  • Our group talked amongst ourselves about Sam and John who seemed to think this was rude as we heard “Excuse me” at 14:58.
  • At 15:01, we were questioned with “Is that you?” then an unprompted “Work” at 15:04.
  • We asked if they worked in the coal mine and, at 15:13, we heard a response of “I did.”
  • As confirmation, we heard “Me” at 15:16.
  • Unsure what the next two responses meant, we heard “Three” at 15:48 and “More” at 15:57. Our assumption is there were three more energies down here with them.
  • An unsettling communication occurred in this timeframe, beginning with “I killed” heard at 16:04 then “John” at 16:33 and the word “Knife” captured at 16:47 and 16:50. This was all in response to us asking how we could help them. In the middle of this, we asked who they killed, which is where we got the name “John.”
  • As we asked if Sam stabbed John, we heard a “No” at 16:52. Perhaps this was too specific and he did not stab him but killed him another way but we never got any other type of confirmation here.
  • We seemed to run out of our time and his patience as we were told to “Go” at 17:18, however, as we began to close down communication lines and pack up equipment, we heard “Wait” at 17:32.
  • As if they tried to keep our attention and convince us against leaving, we heard “Knife?” at 17:37 as if they tried to get the conversation back on track.
  • Seemingly upset with us and not turning our attention back to that conversation, we were told “Good riddance” at 18:53.
  • We then heard an unprompted name of “Barbera” at 19:08 followed by another irritated “Fine” or “Find” ” at 19:42.
  • This was another moment that was much too silent to be heard in person, rather this moment was only heard via our review beginning with “Child” at 19:44.
  • “John” was once again heard at 19:50 but we’re unsure if that’s in reference to John’s child or a child who was involved with John somehow.
  • A cry out of “Hey John” was then heard at 19:53 followed by “Found something” at 19:55 in the same excited tone.

Sitting Room – Better Known As Alfred’s Room

The Sitting Room of the Ross House, better known as Alfred’s Room, carries a reputation distinct from the other spaces in the home. This is the room most often associated with Alfred Zaccigini, who has made himself known so directly to visitors, mainly women. This sensation was so strong that a visiting  medium once sketched his likeness during a session. That drawing now hangs in the very space where he is believed to reside, giving the room an even stronger identity as his. Furnished both simply and historically appropriately, this area is not physically imposing, the energy here often feels unmistakably watchful, as though Alfred himself is still guarding the space.

Our initial time in the room, using only a recorder for simple EVP work, produced little to note; no voices, no direct sensations. But this quiet quickly shifted once we introduced the Portal. The atmosphere grew heavier, and the device began to carry through distinct commands. We were told first to talk, a direct invitation that suggested Alfred was aware of us and expected interaction. Just as quickly, however, the tone shifted and the instruction became a stern get out. The sharpness of this message left little doubt as to the authority behind it. In contrast to the playful child upstairs or the curious miners in the basement, Alfred’s presence here felt direct, intelligent, and protective of his territory, reinforcing why this room is so closely tied to his name. In addition to our communication attempts, as we were packing up at the end of the night, a balloon started to bounce up and down as if someone were pushing it down with enough force to begin to bounce back up, at least three feet off the ground. There was a draft in this room, but in no circumstance could that draft have created an up and down motion like that.

Photos:

  • One of the more unsettling images was captured facing the mirror. Reflected within it, the mirror on the opposite side of the room was visible. Most strikingly, Alfred’s portrait could be seen in the corner of the secondary mirror, as if subtly reminding us that his presence watches over the space from every angle.

Recording 1 – EVP 1:

  • There was nothing to note here. To be fair, we did not attempt to communicate all that much here. We attempted to get acclimated to the room and, perhaps, Alfred who was said to lurk in corners just watching from afar.

Recording 2 – Portal 1:

  • We were told, at :03, to go outside then, just seconds later at :05, of his location with “I’m in the bathroom.”
  • At :43, we were told “Nice step.” Although we have no idea what that meant, we took it as a compliment coming from this supposedly stern entity.

Recording 3 – Portal 2:

  • Without much to go off of, we simply asked if there was anyone in the room who would like to talk to us. At both :10 and :14 we were given emphatic confirmations of “Yeah.”

Recording 4 – Portal 3:

  • After we explained that we believed we spoke with someone who died with him (assuming this was Alfred) and he questioned this with “Died with me?” at :22.

Recording 5 – Portal 4:

  • We told him we meant no harm and simply wanted to speak with him but were told to “Get out” twice at :29 and :48.

Recording 6 – Portal 5:

  • As we spoke between the group, we discussed that it was getting colder, but an intelligent response of “Not that bad” was heard in reply at :09.

Recording 7 – Portal 6:

  • We gently explained to him that we were going to close out with minimal communication and were explicitly told “Whoa f**k at :10. We’re unsure if this was his way of telling us he was excited or if he did not want us to leave, but regardless, the communication up to and including this point was sporadic and random at best.

Recording 8 –Portal 7:

  • After thanking him, we asked for his name for one final time and thanked him for his time regardless. The session shifted at :07 with the name “Dave.” Soon after, at :24 and :34, we were told to “Talk,” however, no matter how much more we tried to follow this command, those were the last words spoken and ultimately silenced the night.

Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:

  • On the left side of the couch, a shadow could be seen as if it was simply lurking at :01.
  • That shadow disappeared then reappeared in the same spot at :09.

Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:

  • A very similar shadow could be seen, at :02, in that same location on the left side.
  • Once again, still eerily similar to the last clip, the shadow disappeared then reappeared at :08.

.Video 3 – Trail Camera 3:

  • A dark spot was seen on the left side here at :01.

Our investigation of the Ross House revealed a space layered not only with stories of its past but with intelligent presences still making themselves known today. What began with subtle atmospheres – shifts of energy in the upstairs hallway, playful flickers of a flashlight, or faint knocks echoing through empty spaces, gradually unfolded into a much deeper dialogue with those who continue to linger within these walls.

Alfred Zaccigini, often regarded as the primary spirit of the house, seemed present but distant during much of our time here. His watchful energy was felt, especially in the sitting room where his portrait rests on the end table, yet he was less forthcoming with communication than expected. It was as if he were observing from afar, overseeing rather than directly engaging, allowing other spirits to step forward more clearly.

Upstairs, the energy seemed to divide between two rooms. In the master bedroom, we encountered what felt like an older woman’s presence. She felt protective, steady, and especially attentive toward our sole female investigator. Her energy gave the impression of ensuring safety before allowing us to continue. The children’s room, by contrast, carried a lighter and more playful tone. Here, our equipment seemed to serve as toys, with flashlights and devices manipulated as though by curious hands. It was also in this room that we pulled the name Grace, suggesting that this playful presence may indeed have an identity tied to the house. The Peggy doll was originally placed on the right side of the couch and upon clean up she was noticed to be sitting on the left side. With a brief discussion with a medium, Sabrina, she felt that there was a young girl, perhaps three years old, attached to this doll and went by the name Emily. Upon hearing this, another group shared with us that they also received the name Emily during an ESTES session while experiencing a young child which may be tied to this doll.

The basement ultimately provided the strongest and most surprising interactions of the investigation. While stories had long spoken of a little girl residing there, our sessions instead brought us into direct contact with three distinct energies: Ed, Sam, and Johnny. Each of these names is tied to the Webb Mine fire disaster, a tragedy deeply embedded in Bellaire’s history. Even more striking, Alfred Zaccigini himself is listed among the men who died in that same disaster, suggesting a powerful and lasting connection between the spirits of the Ross House and this historic event. The communication we received in the basement carried both curiosity and urgency, as though these men were eager to ensure their stories were still remembered. It was unquestionably intelligent, and it made the basement one of the most compelling locations of the entire investigation.

Taken together, these experiences paint a picture of a home that is more than just a building with history. The Ross House is an active meeting place of energies both playful and tragic, protective and urgent. The Ross House does not simply echo with the past; it continues to speak through those who remain, reminding us that history here is not silent, but alive.

We’d like to extend our gratitude to Cindy for welcoming us into the Ross House and allowing us the opportunity to explore its layers of history and energy. Her openness made this investigation possible, and we are thankful for her trust and hospitality throughout our time here.
