The town of Gettysburg, PA is rich in history, its brick laden streets whispering the tales of centuries past. In the mid-1700’s, as the town was growing into a bustling community. Farming was a main industry that thrived due to the location in terms of both weather and physical placement. With this, farms grew and spread amongst the town with abundance. A small cabin was positioned on two acres of land and was within a mere three miles from the central hub of the town. As time went on, this quaint property transitioned into an over 3,000 square feet bed and breakfast with the intent of keeping history alive and, as it once successfully accomplished, thriving in this small town. With the entire town acting as a main stage for the turning point of the Civil War, those dead and dying laid strewn about Gettysburg, unceremoniously – to put it lightly. The limited space and time forced these unfortunate souls into makeshift field hospitals and massive burial pits including this very bed and breakfast; seemingly jump starting the ethereal phenomena.

 

 

Past

 

This historic Air BNB is currently located three miles from the main town of Gettysburg, PA along Biglerville Road, formerly known as Kecklers Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg. The property incorporates a 3,100-square-foot log cabin which was built in 1748 and is situated on two acres of land. The cabin features four bedrooms, two baths, and an original guest cabin which was expanded on during the 1800’s. With preserved walls, windows, and beams the cabin is full of historical value and a life of its own.

 

The property was originally owned by Hance Hamilton, purchased in the 1740’s and operated as a farm. During the Civil War, it served as a Confederate encampment and field hospital. General Robert Emmett Rodes and his men occupied the site during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. From this position they launched an attack on Oak Hill, ultimately pushing Union forces back through town. A historical sign, thirty yards from the lodge, recounts this event.

 

 

One of the most remarkable stories tied to the property involves a 17-year-old blacksmith who was taken prisoner by Confederate soldiers and forced to shoe horses. Overhearing their plans to take him along with the army, he managed to escape up the hill and joined the Union Army. Miraculously, he survived the war and returned to continue his trade.

 

Over the years, the property has changed hands multiple times. In 1927, it was purchased by Oscar Shaw, a famous actor known for hosting lavish parties. Later, in the 1940’s, the property was acquired by the son of a British naturalist and veteran of the Boer War, who renamed the building after his father’s hunting lodge in Britain.

 

Additionally, the grounds include original outhouses and a pool that was inadvertently filled with battlefield dirt and headstones from the national cemetery. The property’s deep historical significance, unique architectural elements, and connection to key moments in American history make it a compelling destination for visitors seeking an immersive historical experience.

 

 

Paranormal Experiences

 

During paranormal investigations and simple overnight stays at Rainworth Lodge, several unexplained phenomena were recorded, including visual, auditory, and physical occurrences. 

 

A shadow figure was seen inside the barn but did not appear on camera. Multiple shadows were observed moving independently.

 

Strange noises and disembodied voices were also recorded. Dragging sounds were heard with no apparent source. Voices captured or heard in real time included phrases such as “No,” “Let me in,” and “Tell us.” Investigators also reported hearing their own names repeated. Other voices stated, “I’m Art,” and “Like you.”

 

 

Children’s voices were detected, with distinct numbers being spoken: “8,” “5,” and “4.” Another voice added, “Good luck.”

 

Physical sensations and energy fluctuations were also experienced. Some investigators reported being touched with no clear cause. Energy devices registered unusual fluctuations and responses throughout the investigation.

 

These findings suggest a strong presence of paranormal activity at Rainworth Lodge, leaving many unanswered questions about its history and unseen inhabitants.

 

 

Rainworth Lodge stands as a testament to Gettysburg’s rich and turbulent past, its very foundation steeped in history and mystery. From its origins as a small farmstead in the 1700s to its role in the Civil War as a Confederate encampment and field hospital, the lodge has borne witness to the struggles and stories of those who came before. The paranormal occurrences reported by guests and investigators alike suggest that the spirits of Rainworth Lodge are unwilling, or unable, to move on. Shadowy figures, disembodied voices, and unexplained physical sensations hint at an unseen presence still tethered to the land.
