Greene County Historical Society – Return Investigation
April 12, 2025
Waynesburg, PA
Investigation
Waynesburg, PA, a small town just south of Pittsburgh, is home to a historic mansion with a storied past. Once a grand estate, it later served as a poor farm before ultimately becoming the permanent home of the Greene County Historical Society and the museum it curates today. Over the years, the building and its surrounding property have undergone extensive restoration and rehabilitation, efforts that continue to this day. Thanks to the tireless dedication of the historical society this remarkable structure, once on the brink of being lost to time, has been beautifully preserved to ensure that the rich history held within its walls will be shared for generations to come.
Our initial investigation at the Greene County Historical Society Museum in Waynesburg, PA revealed significant paranormal activity, both intelligent and residual. Based on collected evidence and personal experiences, we confidently concluded that multiple high-energy entities remain present in this former poor farm.
The Mourning Room exhibited strong residual and intelligent activity, possibly linked to artifacts. A moving cat ball, creaking floorboards, and fluctuating flashlight activity suggested an unseen presence. A thermal camera captured a cold spot on an investigator’s neck, appearing to guide attention toward mourning artwork. Investigators also heard mysterious knocks, crying sounds, and clear footsteps in the hallway, reinforcing the belief that an entity was trying to communicate.
The Barbershop and Hallway seemed to be occupied by two distinct entities, one of whom identified as “Elizabeth.” The area was filled with whispers, knocks, and shuffling noises. A thermal image revealed unexplained footprints near investigators. Direct responses included a request for music, a shift in energy introducing a male presence named “George,” and interactions indicating awareness of time, with an entity expressing disappointment at our departure.
The Dungeon initially housed a playful yet timid energy, triggering K2 meters and Rempod activity. The presence, possibly a child or mentally impaired adult, appeared comforted by a female investigator. However, when the ESTES Method was introduced, the energy shifted. A male entity emerged, stating that he would only communicate with the same investigator. Activity intensified with verbal warnings such as “Move over” and “Touched.” This culminated in a physical interaction where an investigator was tapped, followed by a firm command: “Go.”
Throughout the investigation, physical manifestations were evident. Investigators experienced unexplained cold spots, thermal anomalies, and direct physical contact, including a tap on the shoulder and a pinch in the Dungeon. Thermal imaging captured footprints near the Barbershop. A dark figure was seen in a window reflection in the Kitchen, aligning with past reports. A shadowy presence moved in the main museum area, and hallway lights flickered as a figure peered in and out of a West Wing room. Intelligent communication was consistent, with entities responding to direct questions, providing names, and engaging in conversation. Some displayed curiosity, while others seemed lonely or fearful.
The museum harbors distinct energies tied to specific areas, including a possible male presence in the Mourning Room, a childlike spirit in the Dungeon, and two interactive entities near the Barbershop identified as Elizabeth and George. While no overwhelming negative energy was detected, emotions such as loneliness, curiosity, and fear were strongly present.
Our goal in documenting these findings is to support future investigations, validate past experiences, and preserve the stories of those who once resided here. By continuing to explore and respect the history of this site, we hope to further uncover the mysteries of the Greene County Historical Society Museum.
Prior to this second investigation, knowing the sheer size of the building first hand, we opened our investigation to additional groups who may be interested in joining us. The first team that contacted us actually investigated alongside us during a previous public paranormal investigation of the Mars Train Station so the fit was perfect right off the bat.
Arriving on site a little before 6:00 PM, we were warmly greeted by Matt who is one of the dedicated volunteers who gives his own time and efforts to such a wonderful cause of keeping the Greene County Historical Society thriving. Prior to the investigation itself, our team separated to gather drone footage, set up some of our stationary equipment, and even gain a sense of the energies inside the building. It was two years since our first investigation of the location but the energies had already shifted, not to mention that the building has been empty for a while aside from fellow investigative groups in the past few weeks.
Our team did not participate in the walkthrough but Morgan’s team did and, following that timeframe, we re-grouped with Morgan’s team to game plan a little before separating and beginning the investigation which did begin roughly around 8:00 PM. The investigation may have lasted longer but we were completely drained, not to mention our group felt as though one member was being targeted so we did not want to continue with that potential lingering, which ultimately completed around 2:00 AM.
With the sheer size of the building, we had no choice but to pack for a more mobile investigation. We were able to set and leave our trail cameras but even our stationary cameras were set to be picked up and re-placed in every area we ventured. Our entire equipment list encompassed four motion activated trail cameras (each paired with a cat ball or motion activated light), two motion activated lights, two handheld cameras, two body cameras, five K2 meters, one SB7 Spirit Box, one Ovilus, one Rempod, one Spirit Light, three recorders, one thermal imaging camera, one EM Pump, five light up cat balls, four LED flashlights, one Phasma Box, one laser grid, and one Portal. Once again, due to the amount of movement and exploring, the SLS camera was not set up and used which seems to be becoming a more common occurrence.
The initial impressions to start this second investigation were strong draws to the basement and the attic. As the basement provided us with plenty of communication and even personal communication during the first time here, this may be the reason we were drawn back to this spot combined with the excitement to spend some time up in the attic as a very minimal amount of teams and visitors have the opportunity to visit this location. Both of these spots seemed to hold more of a timid yet anxious energy. Regardless of the reasons, we notated these areas as well as the additional locations we spent time in and gathered evidence from our first visit to the museum. The barbershop and adjacent hallway seemed to hold an almost busy-type energy as if unseen forces were in constant movement and fluctuation. The kitchen area felt much lighter and the energies seemed to come in waves as some experienced a more intense sensation while others, upon swapping locations inside the room, felt absolutely nothing different.
Between the senses we felt throughout the old poor farm and the former evidence and activity we experienced we were able to hone in on specific areas utilizing our trail cameras, motion activated tools, and recorders at each epicenter to pair up these static devices with our tools we packed up and used on the move. The idea was to have eyes and ears everywhere, even in locations where we were not currently at, all throughout the night. These tools were certainly helpful, especially when reviewing specific moments where no one else was around to verify the locations of each individual and ensure there truly was no one in these areas. In addition to this, we also were able to capture additional evidence, like the well-known phantom footsteps which are said to occur when no one is around.
After a detailed and comprehensive review of our evidence and personal experiences, we’ve completed documentation of our second night investigating the Greene County Historical Society Museum in Waynesburg, PA. This investigation reinforced our initial belief that the energies present include a combination of both intelligent and residual energies. Interestingly, these energies appear to move and shift at will, manifesting on their own terms. While they don’t seem to be fully bound to any particular room, some may be unaware of this and could benefit from encouragement or reassurance to move on of their own free will.
Below, we’ve compiled the evidence, personal experiences, and our interpretations from our second paranormal investigation of the Greene County Historical Society Museum. This collection includes photos, audio clips, and video footage, each accompanied by our real-time impressions and interpretations. Throughout the review, we made every effort to debunk each occurrence using various methods. What remains, in our opinion, are compelling and unexplained phenomena including potential communication from the other side. We invite you to share your own thoughts and interpretations by commenting on the website or reaching out to us directly at ironcityparanormal@gmail.com.
We value all critiques and opinions and encourage open discussion. Our initial paranormal investigation is referenced below, with a link provided so you can review our first night in the museum firsthand.

Video recap of both history and our initial investigation:
As always, you have been warned, some of this is not for the faint of heart and can be slightly explicit:
Pre-Investigation: Walkthrough
During our first investigation, we recorded audio and video during our walkthrough, but aside from a few odd building noises, nothing unusual stood out. The atmosphere was, however, noticeably different in the Master Suite and Mourning Art Room during this time. On the second floor in general and the basement in particular, we couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. After our footage review, we did discover flashing lights and a dark figure at the end of the hallway and was markedly unexplainable as all members of the group were accounted for at the time.
We did not partake in the walkthrough this time, rather, we got a sense for the building and used this time to finalize our equipment set up. Our curiosity had the group separating just to gain a sense of the building and each room prior to them being altered by the presence of anyone else. This time period really drew us toward the basement area at which time one of our guest investigators, Jill, was shocked as she ventured downstairs. A motion activated light was facing away from here, toward the trail camera at the end of the hallway. Upon introducing herself the light turned on, startling her as she did not realize it was there, as if to signify someone was stepping forward perhaps remembering her from the last visit or out of curiosity. This was captured on the trail camera and she was clearly not in any location which could have triggered this. Aside from this moment, we were drawn upstairs down the hallway as if being summoned by some unseen force but nothing significant followed this or occurred during our walkthrough prior to the investigation.
Photos:
- We attached a screen capture of the moment when Jill was in the basement as the motion activated light jumped on.
Recording 1 – Main Museum:
- While cleaning up at the end of the night, we heard what sounded like a jerking of the exterior door handle in the midst of our two groups sharing evidence and experiences. This moment can be heard right in the middle of everything at :05.
Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:
- The motion activated light could be seen turning on as Jill introduced herself on the opposite side of the motion activated trigger.
Video 2 – Drone Footage 1:
- There was nothing unexplainable or paranormal here, but this view gives a good idea and feel for the sheer size of the building and properties.
Video 3 – Walkthrough 1:
- This is a compilation of our own walkthrough, not via a tour or tour guide but, once again, it gives an idea of the size of the building as a whole as well as each individual room.
Attic – Third Floor
Leading up from the second floor to the third floor, a narrow stairwell opens up in an area which stretches from the front to back of the building. While this space looks large and roomy, imagine squeezing sixteen adult males in this space to live, sleep, and supposedly get necessary care. Well, that’s exactly what happened when the building was functioning as a poor farm leaving much to be desired from a care-giving perspective let alone a humanity and morale perspective. Needless to say, this space was not well liked and quite harshly looked down upon as the public uncovered this travesty. Not much has been documented here from a paranormal perspective aside from phantom footsteps seemingly moving above guests when they are on the second floor and the sensation of being watched from afar as the rare employee ventures to the space. While the area is not open to the public, it has limited access to even investigative groups and volunteers. Luckily, we were granted access to spend time here and get a feel for the area while investigating. While exploring here, we did find out that there was still a tenant living here much to Derrick and Erin’s chagrin; a bat!
We did not have access to this space during our first investigation, as a matter of fact, when we were told we would have the ability to investigate this area our first reaction was: “There’s a third floor?” as this completely slipped our mind.
This new area (to us) was clearly a draw right from the get-go. We opted to begin here just to see what we could stir up knowing that it may take some time for the energies to accept us and open up to us. Mainly because not many people are ever up here but also because the building hasn’t even opened to the public yet leaving minimal amounts of energy to draw from. This is why we utilized our EM Pump in hopes of providing them with some energy to pull from during our time here. Aside from evidence, some of the investigators felt anxious, felt touches on their necks and back, and were given a sensation of being drawn toward the door near the entrance of the room. There were some physical interactions with cat balls moving, K2 meters lighting, and even creaking floorboards. While these did not lead to much communication, one of the more phenomenal K2 meter spikes occurred here, holding between 15-20 milligauss consistently. Beyond these, there were some other scratching noises, which were not associated with the bat (we tried to debunk this), as well as tapping noises and shuffling of footsteps. A strong image came to the team depicting a middle-aged man with reddish-blonde hair, a beige, unbuttoned shirt, grey-green pants tattered at the edges, no shoes, sad eyes, and a clear lack of nutrition with pallid skin showing his chest bones under the unbuttoned shirt. We did run this description through an AI program and did get some pretty incredible results we’ll share below. After we uncovered a name of “William” paired up with some intense energy spikes, this energy simply disappeared or stepped away not to come out to speak with us any further. We are torn in this regard whether the energy was tied to the name William or if he was afraid of the docent whose name was William and was heavily disliked by the inmates.
Photos:
- Here is an AI produced images of the man that was witnessed in the investigators mind.
- There is a screen capture here of the K2 meter activating.
- This is the moment the K2 meter spiked and held for a period of time.
- We attached a still here of Morgan’s group as the cat ball lit for them just as a light anomaly moved behind them. closer to the camera.
Recorder 1 – EVP 1:
- At about :04, we captured the screeching of a bat which we used to compare and contrast other sounds we heard throughout our time here.
Recorder 2 – EVP 2:
- While one of the investigators’ necks felt a light touch, a heavy breath was captured at :13 followed by the Ovilus producing the word ‘Pushed’ at :34 as if these repetitive touches were in relation to these energies pushing the team.
Recorder 3 – EVP 3:
- There was a strange scratching noise here at :06 but we compared this to the bat screech which did not match up leaving this sound unexplained for the time being.
- At :21, a quiet voice was heard pleading with us with “I need water.”
- Following this, the cat ball placed at the door was seen lighting up as if moved at :25.
Recorder 3a – EVP 3 Amplified:
- This was a further amplified version of the previous clip.
Recorder 4 – EVP 4:
- We asked if they could once again push the cat ball and, at :15, the cat ball by the door moved again.
- An off putting sound of shuffling feet was then captured at :47 emanating from that doorway where the cat ball was located.
- This shuffling of feet was once again captured at :58 following some silence.
Recorder 4a – EVP 4 Amplified:
- This is another clip we further amplified but unfortunately it does distort it just as much as it brings forth the sounds of shuffling.
Recorder 5 – EVP 5:
- This clip followed the image that came to our investigator as well as K2 meter and cat ball activity and starts with further touches to different investigators at :36.
- Near the alcove in the back corner, there were floorboards heard creaking at :48.
- A tapping noise was then captured at 1:11, unprompted.
Recorder 5a – EVP 5 Amplified:
- Similar to the previous clip, this amplified version also somewhat distorts the audio.
Recorder 6 – EVP 6:
- There were further motion activated and energy altering devices alerting us of someone’s presence leading up to a knocking heard at :32.
Recorder 7 – EVP 7:
- As we attempted to confirm that this was their safe space, we heard another noise that we associated with a bat’s screech at :06 but upon listening back to this, we can’t be sure if that is in fact what we were hearing here.
Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:
- While Morgan’s group entered this area, an odd light could be seen moving at the bottom of the screen as well as the car ball lighting up which was placed inside the doorway behind them.
Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:
- There were some odd light anomalies here but we believe these can be debunked as dust particles moving from the group interrupting the static space.
Video 3 – Handheld Camera 1:
- Right away, the K2 meter could be seen spiking.
- As we turned toward the doorway, the cat ball was seen moving and lighting up at :07.
- Our attention turned back toward the K2 meter across from the group as it lit multiple times as we discussed the name William beginning at :16.
- This K2 meter activity continued throughout this clip and could be seen spiking at :21, :25, :30, :36, :42, and finally :46.
Video 4 – Handheld Camera 2:
- After a short break from the video camera, we did revert back to utilizing this to capture the extensive K2 meter activity which continued here beginning early on at :05.
- This K2 meter continued to jump at :08, :11, :14, :22, ending at :26.
Video 5 – Handheld Camera 3:
- The cat ball, placed in the doorway, could be seen lighting up as if it was pushed and moving at :07 and :10.
Video 6 – Handheld Camera 4:
- Once more, the same cat ball resting in the main entry doorway was captured lighting up and moving multiple times here starting at :01
- This continued at :38, 1:04, 1:24, and finally at 1:50.
Video 7 – Clip On Body Camera 1:
- The K2 meter could be seen spiking at :04.
Video 8 – Clip On Body Camera 2:
- All throughout the clip the K2 meter could be seen jumping.
Video 9 – Stationary Camera 1:
- The K2 meter could be seen jumping three times here at :25, :27, and :30.
Video 10 – Stationary Camera 2:
- As we discussed the name William the energy drove up the K2 meter as could be seen at :14, :19, :59, and 1:03.
- The K2 meter spikes continued throughout the clip here at 1:08, 1:10, and 1:12.
- Even though the secondary K2 meter could not be seen very well, both of the meters jumped and held steadily from 1:34 – 1:40.
- Once again, the K2 meter jumped at 1:43 and 1:47.
- After a pause, the K2 meter activity continued here again at 2:16, 2:19, 2:22, 2:24, 2:27, 2:33, 2:37, 2:44, 2:46, 2:50, and 2:53.
- Mentioning the name William set off the K2 meter more so at 3:04, 3:08, 3:17, and 3:19.
- The K2 meter flickered on and off from 3:22 – 3:29.
- Finally wrapping up this timespan, the K2 meter spiked two more times at 3:34 and 3:37.
Mourning Art Room – Second Floor
On the second floor, inside the Master Suite, which would have stationed the steward, we dubbed the area Mourning Art Room. This space contains macabre artwork made from the hair or clothing of deceased loved ones; a once-common mourning practice. Many of these artifacts were donated by locals or left behind by those from the poor farm who had no family. The unsettling nature of these items, combined with an undeniable intuitive pull, made this a key focus of our walkthrough.
During our first investigation, we were clearly drawn to this room right from the get-go. While the entire group did not venture here right away, four of us were present for this section of the investigation. The unexplained phenomena seemed to intensify as people left the area beginning with the cat ball lighting up and moving which began to open up to more unexplained activity like unexplained squeaking noises and a cat’s meow. Our Ovilus, K2 meter, and flashlight all helped guide us as we attempted to discover if we were experiencing residual or intelligent energy. A cold handprint on an investigator was detected on the thermal camera and was physically felt but vanished almost instantly. To add to the intense activity bursts, the flashlight responded to yes/no questions, followed by knocks and crying from another room. Then, clear footsteps were heard outside the room as if in direct reference to the past reports of phantom footsteps recorded here. This was so clear that the group assumed it was another investigator. As the group checked, they found that everyone was accounted for elsewhere in the building. Two investigators decided to follow the noises which led them to more footsteps and even the sound of heavy breathing with no identifiable source.
While we did not get as lucky as we were during our initial investigation, this room took a bit of time to get anything going. Perhaps another area associated with the lack of energy in the form of guests with the building closed. After some silence and simple focus and concentration by the team, our investigator was once again gifted with a vision of a man in the opposite room standing next to the bed. This man was older and wore a black and white tux with a tall hat until the image altered to him no longer wearing the hat, which was an interesting interaction alone. The man had white hair, while balding on the top of his head, with facial hair covering his chin and lightly on his cheeks. Later during this timeframe, this man was shown pulling out a shiny gold chain from his pocket but there was nothing attached to it although it was safe to assume this was some type of watch chain. Following some creaking floors and knocking sounds, this image was shown to a different investigator but astonishing in a younger form. This man was seemingly similar but with black hair and not balding complete with a black mustache while wearing some type of formal white shirt with a black necktie and a silver clip. As we attempted to narrow this down, the picture above the mantle was noticed as similar but not exactly the same man depicted. Following these, there was no communication but some echoing, indecipherable voices were heard followed by heavy breathes and even a crashing noise from a different room which ultimately led to us wrapping up here and moving along.
Photos:
- We utilized AI to create the image of this man, both in older form and younger.
Recorder 1 – EVP 1:
- After getting the initial image of the man and trying to get further detail, we heard a creaking noise by the bed he was seen standing next to at :21 and again at :30.
Recorder 2 – EVP 2:
- Following the vision of the younger version of this man, then discussing him with the group, we heard a knocking sound at :22.
- This led to indecipherable voices echoing down the hallway from :36 – :40.
Recorder 2a – EVP 2 Amplified:
- This amplification helped differentiate the knocking sound and odd voices but it also distorted the audio a little too much for our liking.
Recorder 3 – EVP 3:
- A loud crash was heard in a neighboring room at :02 followed by the Ovilus producing the word ‘Wood’ at :22 as if to tell us this was the sound of some type of wood.
- A breath was captured at :54 and not heard at the time but tis could be some type of residual action if someone knocked over some type of wood creating that crashing sound in the past.
Video 1 – Stationary Camera 1:
- This is a long version, unclipped or altered to simply show the room and our locations. To note, there was nothing abnormal captured in this video.
Dungeon – Basement
The basement, accessed through the Green Hallway and down a flight of wooden stairs, dates back to the mansion’s original construction and was expanded over time. Divided into two sections, it housed workshops, storage areas, and a punishment zone where violent inmates were once shackled for days. A pair of faux handcuffs now serves as a reminder of these harsh conditions. Many volunteers avoid this area, reporting feelings of being watched, hearing distant cries, and unexplained footsteps. Paranormal investigators have also recorded unusual activity, including responses on K2 meters and Rempods, reinforcing the basement’s eerie reputation.
Our first investigation in this area began with just two investigators, but as the group grew, the activity seemed to decrease. Initially, the K2 meters and Rempods were actively responding, indicating that the entity was alone, didn’t like being there, and was always present in this space. Cold spots coincided with K2 activations, suggesting movement near the original duo. As the entire team gathered, we attempted the ESTES method, which led to more communication, including a request to “Move over” and a reaction to a noise, with responses like “No” and “You,” suggesting a realization that the noise wasn’t from us. We were told there was a “Man” present, who appeared to take an interest in one of the female investigators, responding with “No, you” when questioned about his attraction to her. The session was cut short when one investigator felt a touch, though he initially thought it was someone from the group, but no one had moved. The word “Touch” was heard through the Spirit Box just before this. After a break and a switch in listeners, the former listener received a simple “Sorry.” As the communication dwindled, we were told to be “Done” and “Go,” and we respectfully complied.
This area had a clearly different sense during this investigation. What’s more is that this atmosphere seemed to alter all throughout the night. While the area was very cold, it was a little difficult to get settled in but once we did, we felt as though someone was hiding in the rooms, just very hesitant to come out let alone speak to us. This was not at all like the first investigation where we had someone coming up to us trying to speak with us. What we did gather was that this energy was interested in some of the devices but not necessarily us. The cat balls lit multiple times as well as the K2 meter lit. We heard shuffling of feet, knocks, and echoing voices but nothing that was substantial nor that was interested in communicating with us. Eventually, we gathered that there were too many investigators here so we split up with half going upstairs toward the barbershop with two investigators remaining here. While the energy was a little lighter, the only activity received was a K2 meter lighting up after we asked if that was better with less people. This did not last long as we moved on with limited communication but we did get a sense that there was peace and calm down here. Additionally, we were told, later in the night, that Morgan and his group felt a much different sensation down here which sent a chill down his spine and he did not even feel comfortable turning his flashlight off to attempt to communicate.
Photos:
- There was few light anomaly moving across the screen through our video camera as we pulled out a screen capture here.
Recorder 1 – EVP 1:
- Shuffling footsteps could be heard stemming from the entry hallway at :12 and again at :29.
Recorder 1a – EVP 1 Amplified:
- The shuffling of footsteps could be heard thanks to the amplified version but it once again distorted the surrounding source audio.
Recorder 2 – EVP 2:
- There was a trio of knocking noises heard here as we were still trying to get them to step forward. This was captured at :34, :42, and finally at :48.
Recorder 3 – EVP 3:
- A similar noise, this time slightly different by a light tapping, was captured at :13.
Recorder 4 – EVP 4:
- After we split, leaving two investigators down here on their own, not too much occurred with the energy output or atmosphere but after we directly asked them if it was better with less people down here, the K2 meter seemed to answer this with a positive response as it lit up at :34.
Video 1 – Stationary Camera 1:
- At :03, an odd, unexplainable light anomaly could be seen moving in front of the group.
Video 2 – Stationary Camera 2:
- Another strange light was captured here moving sporadically at :12.
Hallway Outside of Barbershop / Barbershop – Second Floor
At the end of a darkened hallway on the second floor, before the West Wing expansion, lies what was once a lively social hub for the elderly visiting the in-house barbershop. Decorated with vintage leather barber chairs and the classic candy-striped pole, this area maintains an old-time charm. While there are no known records of tragedies or violence here, it was one of the rare spaces where men and women, typically separated by gender, could interact. Some of these encounters reportedly led to relationships and, in some cases, undocumented and unwanted births; though these remain largely rumors.
During our initial investigation, we noticed that whatever presence occupied the building seemed uneasy with large groups, prompting us to split into pairs. Two investigators, drawn to the Barbershop Room, began experiencing faint whispers, unexplained knocks, and shuffling footsteps. Using the Phasma Box, we received the name “Elizabeth” and a direct invitation: “Come in.” Thermal imaging revealed footprints near an investigator, but as we attempted to move closer, we were twice warned to “Stop.” Attempts to take photos were met with mixed responses, including a final, firm “No.”
Later, during that first investigation, we returned with music, as requested, and encountered what seemed to be a different presence named “George.” Initially dissatisfied with our song choice, we received a cryptic phrase from the Ovilus, which turned out to be an actual song. Upon playing it, we heard confirmation: “Yes, that’ll work.” As the night concluded, the entity acknowledged the late hour with “It’s late” and questioned our departure with “But why?” When asked for any final messages, we received a gruff and final “No,” bringing our investigation to a close.
As the group split up, leaving half in the basement with two other investigators venturing upstairs the pair began in the first floor hallway walking up to the second floor. At this point, the duo did not settle in but rather listened, paused, then continued. This started simply by listening quietly which provided fruitful as there were footsteps heard. This was originally thought to be Morgan’s group walking above, but the area that they were located in at the time was on the opposite side of the building nor were they moving. The group once again was on the move and thought they heard Morgan’s group with low voices, knocking, and even breathing but none of this would have made sense as they were nowhere near the two groups. To play devil’s advocate with these, the echoes and noises certainly do travel and sound strange as they move about the old, humongous building, but we could not duplicate these even with Morgan and his group’s help. Down the hallway, we did set our trail camera just to watch the area in hopes of duplicating a finding from our initial investigation but instead, we captured some motion lights being alerted and phantom footsteps heard as if they were responsible for activating the trail cameras. These actions were not uncovered until our review of our evidence from the night of the investigation.
While we captured some incredible noises, our intent was to communicate so we decided to finally settle in somewhere which ultimately led to the barbershop. Erin could not get settled as she stood the entire time nor did she want to turn her back to the singular doorway or hallway. During this period of time, we were given some commands like “Sit” and an intelligence of the amount of investigators with “Two” but Erin eventually felt extremely uncomfortable and practically chased out of the room as she was spiritually affected by this unseen energy as we captured some communication in the form of “Go” and “Other” and “Woman.” Another command of “Look” was heard prior to a pair of loud bangs which actually felt as though they shook the building. This was certainly interpreted as a way to get to Erin and chase her out.
When we returned later, the atmosphere absolutely shifted with none of the sensations of overwhelming or not being wanted occurring with three men in the room. An interesting theory was proposed by Morgan as we sat in the room upon our return. He noted that the only investigator to be spiritually affected like this was a woman in an area that was predominantly a male populace. In addition to this, she exited toward the area that was mostly females as if subconsciously going toward a more protective, safer space. While we did spend some time here this second time around, we were hoping to get an answer as to why they focused on Erin but never did. What we did get was some energy sensors showing a change in the form of Rempods and Spirit Lights. We felt as though there was someone in the hall after we heard shuffling and tapping but as we explained that we couldn’t stay all night and we’d have to move on if they wouldn’t speak to us, they reasoned with us with “Please don’t go.” After our batteries were drained we were told that we “You’re ****ed” paired up with some laughter. We explained that we were not there to harm them or make fun of them or anything negative but were eventually told “Done” and “For” as if they did not appreciate us coming into the barbershop unwelcomed and were finally told to “Go away.” Incredibly though, as we acknowledged this, the atmosphere suddenly got colder, felt by all three investigators as if a cold snap circled the room. We began to pack up but heard a cry out of “Help me” just as one of the investigators felt a tightness on his chest. We continued to pack our gear in this room but heard another seemingly more heartfelt cry out of “Come back here.” Up until that point, all of this communication was heard through the Spirit Box / Portal. The final spoken word was not captured through these devices though. We were ready to move along, as they seemed to originally want us to do, and heard a whisper “Let me out” from mid-air as if they were trapped either in this room, building, or property altogether.

- The trail camera watching the hallway captured some motion activated lights here which we recorded a screen capture of the trail camera video.
- There was a light anomaly seen moving out in the hallway as our attention turned that direction during our return trip into the barbershop.
Recorder 1 – Hallway EVP 1:
- At first, we thought we simply heard Morgan’s team walking about but we were able to confirm that this was not the case as we captured footsteps at :10, :16, and :18.
Recorder 2 – Hallway EVP 2:
- Again, thinking we overheard Morgan’s team, there were indecipherable voices at :08.
- This was followed by an odd knocking sound at :14.
Recorder 3 – Hallway EVP 3:
- As we felt as though we were being followed as we walked toward the barbershop, we captured a breath at :07.
Recorder 4 –Hallway EVP 4 – Trail Camera Audio:
- This audio was pulled from the trail camera placed in this same hallway where we captured heavy footfalls throughout the clip with no one in the area.
Recorder 5 – Barbershop Spirit Box 1:
- As Derrick sat in the room, Erin stood in the corner unable to get herself settled in all the while facing the open doorway. As if being given a command, we heard “Sit” at :10.
Recorder 6 – Barbershop Spirit Box 2:
- Whatever energy was in this room seemed to pinpoint Erin here as they told her to “Go” at :05 then “Out” at :07.
- As Derrick spoke, he seemed to get a greeting of “Hello” at :13 as if completely changing the aura of the room switching from a female to male.
Recorder 7 – Barbershop Spirit Box 3:
- Mentioning the recorder was placed on the table, we heard a confirmation of “Table” at :04 followed by the number “Two” at :08 as if to notate the amount of investigators.
- Derrick once again spoke and heard another greeting beginning with “You” at :39 continuing with “Hi” at :48. Again, it seemed as though they were differentiating male and female inside their room.
- Turning their attention once again toward Erin, we heard “Woman” at :50.
Recorder 8 – Barbershop Spirit Box 4:
- With their attention again turned, we were told to “Go” at :02.
- As we didn’t react to this, we heard another command of “Look” at :04 which seemingly attempted to get us to pay attention to the loud bang heard at :07 and felt as though it shook the building.
- This ultimately got to Erin and chased us out of the room while we left our equipment running as we needed to regroup and get her out of the area immediately.
Recorder 9 – Barbershop Spirit Box 5:
- As we left this area, we left the equipment run. At :02, another bang similar to the previous noise that ended our time here during our first session was heard..
Recorder 10 – Barbershop Spirit Box 6:
- The Ovilus produced two odd words with “The” and “Swing” at :04 and :17.
Recorder 11 – Barbershop Return EVP 1:
- As we began to settle in for our second stint in the barbershop, the energy manipulating devices began to alert, starting with the Rempod at :02 then the Spirit Light at :47.
Recorder 12 – Barbershop Return EVP 2:
- A shuffling of phantom footsteps was once again heard in this timeframe echoing from the outside hallway at :05 and :07.
Recorder 13 – Barbershop Return Spirit Box 1:
- At this point, we did get slightly frustrated and explained that we did not appreciate them going after one of our investigators. We did not try to come across excessively angry or negative but our frustrations could certainly show through a bit. As if these energies took this as a threat of us leaving, we were asked “Please don’t go” at :12.
- Dan’s name was then heard repeated at :42.
Recorder 14 – Barbershop Return Spirit Box 2:
- After our batteries suddenly drained from our stationary camera, we were seemingly mocked perverted with a “You’re f****ed!” at :10.
- Following that more condescending, aggressive comment we heard laughter at :14.
Recorder 15 –Barbershop Return Spirit Box 3:
- A tapping sound was captured at :06
- Realizing they were there, we explained that we, nor our tools, would cause them any harm. We were seemingly threatened with “Done” at :22 then “For” at :24..
Recorder 16 – Barbershop Return Spirit Box 4:
- We tried to re-focus and asked if they chased Erin away and heard a gruff, almost irritated command of “Go away” at :16.
- The Ovilus confusingly produced the word ‘Elemental’ at :18 just as the entire room grew extremely cold at :38, as every investigator mentioned this sensation aloud.
Recorder 17 – Barbershop Return Spirit Box 5:
- Out of nowhere, completely unprompted, we were asked for some semblance of help with “Help me!” at :04 just as one of the investigators felt a strong push on his chest.
- We were then told to “Go” twice at :09 and :14.
- Another pleading voice asked if we could stay once more with “Come back here” at :33.
Recorder 18 – Barbershop Return Spirit Box 6:
- While we began to pack up, still utilizing the Spirit Box, we heard another cry for help with “Let me out” at :03. This voice was incredibly heard through thin air, however, not through the device itself..
Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:
- During this point in time, the motion activated camera seemed to activate with no one nearby and footsteps could be heard echoing from this space.
- Our group could be seen walking through the doorway later on in this clip but much later than the motion activated camera would have picked up.
Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:
- In this clip, loud footsteps could be heard as the building’s motion activated light was also triggered although there was no one in this area.
Video 3 – Handheld Camera 1:
- During this clip, the handheld camera was being carried toward the hallway where the trail camera was set up. While we didn’t capture anything out of the ordinary, we did confirm that there was no one else in the area nor was there any explainable reason for the trail camera to be activated.
Video 4 – Handheld Camera 2:
- This clip was also captured from the opposite end of the hallway where the trail camera was placed and activated. There was no reason, based on this and our knowledge that anything physical or worldly to explain the activation of the trail camera.
Video 5 – Stationary Camera 1:
- At :07, there was an unexplained light seen at :07.
Video 6 – Clip On Body Camera 1:
- At :07, the Rempod could be heard activating then once again at :33.
Video 7 – Clip On Body Camera 2:
- The Rempod was once again active during this timeframe beginning at :04.
- This activity continued at :13, :23, :29, and finally :32..
Kitchen (AKA Sarah’s Room) – First Floor
A simple, typical kitchen, located just outside the main museum area, serves as a reminder of the past. While it’s large enough to have fed residents multiple times a day, nothing particularly stands out—except for the pizza oven. The wall behind it appears to stretch on endlessly, creating an eerie sense of space. According to local legend, a former inmate named Sarah once tried to warm up another inmate’s illegitimate baby in that very oven. Although there’s no documented evidence to support this, it’s a chilling tale passed down over time. Paranormal enthusiasts visiting the area have reported strange occurrences, including the smell of something freshly baking, creaking footsteps pacing back and forth, and more recently, a shadow seen peeking around the corner, even captured in the reflection of the glass window.
We spent some time in this area, during our initial investigation, but nothing significant was captured during any specific time frame. Many investigators were drawn here on multiple occasions, but the activity mostly involved chasing phantom noises, such as knocks or footsteps. When we set up a trail camera, we did capture a dark figure moving in the reflection of the window. Aside from these brief moments, there was no intelligent communication or interaction from any entities present.
During our time here, we never felt anything off or abnormal. We were still fresh off our incident in the barbershop so there is a potential that we were still a bit shaken up. We never did get much communication here, nor activity, but one area we began to feel drawn to and compelled to interact with further was the pizza oven. At first, we were a bit timid knowing some of the horrible actions which occurred here in the past, but once we built up the courage to physically open the steel door and place the Spirit Light inside that seemed to stir things up just a bit. The K2 meter and flashlight were both triggered multiple times paired up with knocking and squealing noises that led us to believe there certainly was some type of otherworldly energy associated with this room. The unfortunate part of this was that this was not indicative of any intelligent energies nor did these moments pair up with anything in particular that could have been a residual cause for the activity. That does not mean that these unseen forces were not the cause for these energy fluctuations, it just makes things more difficult to prove or debunk as they are not repeatable nor is there any direct correlation to them.
Photos:
- We shared a screen capture of the trail camera video showing the Rempod up.
- Through another screen capture of the trail camera, the cat ball, next to the investigator, could be seen lighting up.
- This clip shows the moment where the flashlight was knocked over even though no one was touching the table at that point in time.
- With no one else in the room at this time, the cat ball was captured lighting up as if pushed via trail camera and shared here through a screen capture.
Recorder 1 – EVP 1:
- After we moved the Spirit Light inside the oven, there was an odd and unsettling noise heard at :06 which was also heard in person. We are still unsure as to what this noise could have been inside that pizza oven.
Recorder 2 – EVP 2:
- A sound reminiscent of a door squeaking open was heard in the moment by the group and captured at :11. We did check the closest doors and any location we thought may echo like that but could not find any reasoning for this sound.
Recorder 3 – EVP 3:
- Following a few K2 meter spikes, we discussed Erin not feeling well after the barbershop incident. As if recognizing this, some unseen force made knocking noises in a trio starting at :17, continuing at :26, and finally ending at :29. This sound, too, was unexplained.
Video 1 – Trail Camera 1:
- Right away, the cat ball which was placed on the table, could be seen moving and lighting up on its own with no one in the room.
Video 2 – Trail Camera 2:
- During Morgan’s group investigating this area, the Rempod could be seen being alerted sporadically.
Video 3 – Trail Camera 3:
- Again, with Morgan’s team spending more time here, the Rempod could once again be lit as if something was interrupting the energy field it produced.
Video 4 – Trail Camera 4:
- During this time frame, the K2 meter which was located behind Morgan’s group, could be seen activating here.
Video 5 – Trail Camera 5:
- The same K2 meter was noticed spiking here as well.
Video 6 – Trail Camera 6:
- The Rempod activity picked up here once again, as the energy seemed to move away from the K2 meter back toward the table where the Rempod was stationed.
Video 7 – Stationary Camera 1:
- The flashlight could be seen getting knocked over on its own at :10.
Video 8 – Clip On Body Camera 1:
- At :16, the flashlight, stationary on the table, fell over as if pushed.
Video 9 – Clip On Body Camera 2:
- There was a noise echoing out of the oven heard at :10.
Following our initial paranormal investigation of the Greene County Historical Society Museum in Waynesburg, PA, and a thorough review of the evidence and personal experiences collected that night, we confidently concluded that we had encountered multiple high levels of energy, both intelligent and residual, throughout the former poor farm. This early investigation revealed several distinct entities drawn to specific areas of the building. A strong male presence appeared to be connected to the Mortuary artworks or the adjacent bedroom, while a child-like energy, possibly a mentally handicapped adult with the mind of a child, seemed to linger in the basement, projecting a sense of loneliness and unhappiness. Additionally, two more dominant energies were detected near the Barbershop and the main corridor, both seemingly curious about visitors and, based on our interpretations at the time, may have gone by the names “Elizabeth” and “George.” The combination of recorded evidence and direct interaction during this first investigation provided a solid foundation for our belief that active paranormal phenomena exist within the museum.
After countless hours spent reviewing recordings, analyzing video footage, and reflecting on our personal experiences during our second investigation of the Greene County Historical Society Museum in Waynesburg, PA, we confidently conclude that this former mansion turned poor farm, now a home to a beautifully decorated museum, is a focal point for unexplained paranormal activity. The multiple energies present seem to be connected less to the property per se but more so to the building’s rich history and the warm, inviting atmosphere maintained by its current ownership group. These lingering presences are unmistakable and suggest the location is a true hub for supernatural phenomena.
During this follow-up investigation, we were able to validate previous unexplained experiences while uncovering new insights and communication with energies from the other side. Our findings strongly suggest that the spirits within this historic building have either shifted over time or possess the freedom to come and go as they wish. Interestingly, the more dominant entities we encountered during our initial visit were either absent or uninterested in engaging with us during this return, except for the residual energy in the Kitchen which remained active. While we can’t definitively explain why, it seems certain energies are drawn to specific areas of the property. Though not necessarily confined to these rooms, the spirits appear to favor some spaces more than others, indicating a deeper connection tied to the building’s past.
While the initial investigation provided us with names of George and Elizabeth, the only name given to us clearly was “William.” This name was provided in the attic with energy spikes consistently backing this name up but we were made aware that this was one of the docents who was not so well liked during the poor farm’s life span. With that, we were actually torn between this energy’s identity as William versus them being more or less frightened of a William while spiking the energy tools as if to try to relay this sensation to us.
The emotion level and energy changes were evident and constant from the start of the evening as we set up our equipment all the way up until our departure as we were collecting our final pieces of equipment. The kitchen was a prime example of this as we seemed to catch typical movement from the table to the oven and vice versa where the energy just kept repeating itself as if someone was still cooking or baking here far beyond their expiration. This was also noticeable in the west wing hallway leading toward the barbershop. There were multiple occasions where shadows triggered our equipment and heavy footfalls were heard as if someone was still doing their rounds or walking toward the socially active hotspot of the barbershop making their way to one of their favorite locations of the building here the inmate could still feel like themself and active as they were prior to their induction into the poor farm. Other unexplained sounds could also be classified as residual as if doors were closing still, following their old routines even though doors could be physically moved in this plane of existence.
Inside and surrounding the mourning art room there also seemed to be residual energies, but here, the most paranormal anomalies, aside from some unexplained noises, was a clear vision of an older man near the bed next door. This older man wore a black and white tuxedo and a tall hat. Interestingly, the image appeared to shift; first showing the man with the hat, then later without it. He had white hair, balding at the crown, and facial hair along his chin and lightly across his cheeks. At one point, he was even seen pulling a shiny gold chain from his pocket, which, while unattached to anything visible, was likely part of a pocket watch. The image appeared again, depicting the man as a younger version of himself. His features were strikingly similar, though now he had black hair, no visible balding, and a black mustache. He wore a formal white shirt, a black necktie, and a silver tie clip. As we tried to make sense of the vision, we noticed a portrait above the mantle that resembled the figure, though it wasn’t an exact match.
While that image seemed to come across as residual, we did have a different image come through in the form of a more intelligent form after asking if the energy in the attic would show itself. A vivid image was perceived of a malnourished, reddish-blonde man with pale skin, no shoes, and tattered clothing. This man eventually provided us with the name William although we’re unsure if this is a name associated with him or if this was the docent who many inmates were afraid of; with this man being no exception. These theories came about as significant energy spikes occurred through creaking floorboards, cat balls, and K2 meters, one time it actually held steady between 15-20 milligauss for a period of time. This was all paired with unexplained tapping and knocks coinciding with that name as if these energies were trying to draw our attention away or even showed fear every time we brought him up.
This intelligence was not just experienced upstairs on the third floor but also in the second floor inside and surrounding the barbershop. This began with footsteps, as if someone was following the investigators which led to echoing voices, knocks, and heavy breathing all of which led the group inside the barbershop. As we attempted verbal communication, the female investigator felt extremely uncomfortable as if she was not at all welcomed. This continued to the actual communication as we were initially given intelligence by these energies telling her to “Sit” while providing us with the amount of investigators with “Two.” As the female investigator began to feel targeted, the communication continued to pick up with a command of “Go” and, as the male attempted to tell them to stop, a word of “Other” as if they were not interested in him but instead, the “Woman.” Forcing her out was another form of intelligence as we were told to “Look” which was followed by a pair of booming bangs that, to us, felt as though it shook the building. As she proceeded to leave the area, she followed the female wing hallway as if fleeing in safety toward other unseen women away from the men’s wing, chased out by some dominant male energy who did not want any women in their domain.
The intelligence remained as the group returned, all men, although the atmosphere clearly shifted as if they were calmed by the fact that there were no women with us any longer. There were Rempod and Spirit Light energy changes which reacted to our presence but we were once again seemingly threatened with curse language of “You’re f***ed” and a demand for us to leave with “Go away.” As this was enough to force us out of the room we packed up but it seemed as though a different energy wanted our comfort and companionship as they pleaded with us with “Please don’t go” and a cry out of “Help me.” One final intelligence asked us for further help with “Let me out” it felt as though this secondary energy was trapped in this room with the more dominant energy and clearly dd not want to be here. Perhaps, our female investigator was even giving them solace and comfort and the more dominant energy noticed this forcing her out of, not only the room but, the entire building.
Not only were the communications notably residual or intelligent but there were also altering indications of these energies’ appearance with physical manipulations and touches. Many of these moments were captured in both personal and evidential devices but there were even more moments captured in devices like the trail cameras and stationary cameras which were not noted until our review and were never notated in person. Aside from K2 meters changing appearance indicating energy alterations all throughout the building, but cat balls could also be seen lighting up which indicated movement of these devices which signified some energy physically pushing them or moving them in some fashion which occurred mainly in the attic, the basement, and the kitchen. Each of these allowed us to notate that the cat balls and K2 meters were activated by both intelligent and residual energies. We did not get the opportunity to utilize flashlight communication thoroughly but this was pinpointed mainly in the kitchen which evidentially showed that the residual energy lit this up in just another energy altering regard highlighting their path of travel in the afterlife.
The physicality was not just evident through the devices. There were touches felt throughout the night on investigators bodies. Early on in the evening just during setup, one of the investigators felt a cold touch brush past her arm. In this same area, a different investigator felt a touch on their neck, and yet another investigator felt a touch on their back. Following these moments, we were given the word ‘Push’ as if these sensations were all related to an attempt to push us. Not entirely a full physical touch, but as noticeable, both the barbershop and the basement grew cold as if a sweeping energy made their way around the room, causing different investigators to grow old all at different times and clearly not a breeze blowing through either area.
Our follow-up investigation was largely driven by the lingering unease we felt, paired with findings from our initial visit. Some prior claims were validated but the energy within the old poor farm had noticeably shifted which made it difficult to build upon many of our previous discoveries. The energies we once connected with, specifically Elizabeth, George, and William (from the basement), no longer appeared to be present. Interestingly, the name William did come through again, but in a completely different location and most certainly a manner.
While the reasoning for the amount of energies remains a mystery, each one with its own individual reasoning for remaining in this plane of existence, those we encountered during our initial investigations may likely still reside here. This time, however, we have seemingly encountered four separate energies. Two of these provided us with a visual representation of themselves but none of them gave us any names which is how they seemed to prefer it; their existence known and acknowledged yet remaining anonymous.
As with our initial investigation of the Greene County Historical Society Museum, we were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to spend focused time within such a historically rich building especially being allowed up into the third floor attic which is not normally available. In a town like Waynesburg, PA, where much of the history has been preserved through word of mouth rather than official records, it’s no surprise that this long-standing institution has likely inherited the same tradition. We’re honored to have earned the trust to explore this space and are committed to respecting its legacy, striving to uphold the same integrity and values that have guided its caretakers from the building’s origins to its current role as a museum.
Our hope, and true purpose, is to help preserve history and keep it alive so future generations can continue to admire and learn from the past while honoring those who came before us. Since taking our first steps here, back in 2023, we’ve continued to build on our findings, documenting every detail, from actions to names (or lack thereof), with the goal of leaving behind a clear path for those who follow. This mission extends beyond the paranormal; it only takes someone open-minded, compassionate, or simply curious to continue assembling the puzzle. Together, as a collective effort, we may one day uncover the full story of former employees, caretakers, and anyone who loved this property. These individuals, seen or unseen, share a space within the Greene County Historical Society Museum, a timeless home where memory, spirit, and history intertwine.
A special thanks goes out to Morgan, Natalie, and Jim for joining in our paranormal investigation. It was an honor and privilege to share the space with them and learn how they do things, as well as share all of our personal experiences and get to know everyone that much more! Matt, from the Greene County Historical Society, helped guide us along on our evening, giving us access to all areas of the building including some which are not always open to the public, and sharing his stories and extensive knowledge with us!
