Anchorage Mansion

Marietta, OH
Investigation
Not far from our home town of Pittsburgh, the small and historic town of Marietta, Ohio offers a unique look into the past while mixing in a modern touch. There are a multitude of gorgeous views looking both into and out of the town. As we approached the town from the east, the winding Muskingum River came into view as we looked toward Marietta from above on the highway. The old town overlooks this river and its natural beauty is nearly overshadowed by the old brick façade buildings that lined the town’s crisscrossing roads. Along with the outstretched bridges act as a serene reminder of the past that is held inside the city limits, it’s as if you are stepping back into time.
On the outskirts of the town, overlooking Marietta and the merging rivers, the Anchorage Mansion seemingly watches over the small town with its tall and ominous tower. Over the past few years the wonderful historical society and local historical preservation group, Hidden Marietta, have completed beautiful renovations taking the mansion back to the majority of its original designs and former glory. The groups have not only renovated the building, but also added to the visual appeal and historic value by acquiring old furniture realistic to the original time period.
The original mansion was constructed in 1862 for the Putnam family; Eliza and Douglas. Unfortunately, Eliza only lived in her gorgeous dream home for less than three years until her tragic death from a horrible heart disease. During their short time in the home, it had acted as an important safe haven for runaway slaves in the attic and basement. Without his lost love, Douglas could not live in the house any longer on his own and he sold the house to the highest bidder; the Knox family. This family almost immediately re-designed the driveway to appear as an anchor, giving the mansion its’ current and long standing name. From there, the mansion was passed along to a local nursing home in 1960, paving the way for modern upgrades and some unusual designs to fit in more patients and living quarters. After lost funding, the nursing home was forced to close its doors in 1986 and unfortunately fell into a state of disrepair. Before anyone else could get their hands on the property, the historical society purchased the house and land for $1.00 and have been attempting to restore the historical mansion ever since.
There have been a plethora of reported paranormal sightings from guests and employees alike. With her tragic end, it’s no surprise that Eliza is attributed to being a main haunting inside the mansion. She has been seen looking out of windows, staring aimlessly, walking the halls and staircases, particularly the second floor and the tower. Eliza has been seen in a long white, flowing dress with long curly hair. She was first seen when the construction to turn the mansion into a nursing home and Eliza has been prevalent ever since.
Another spirit is said to be that of a young African American boy, possibly a runaway slave or a former servant to the house. He is said to wonder about the old servant quarters as well as the basement. His M.O. is that of a mischievous teenager, moving objects and hiding them throughout the building. A loud crying is also attributed to come from this same spirit as if he’s in pain or mourning the loss of a loved one.
In the upper floors, the attic and tower in particular, a former owner of Eddie McTaggert has been reported to still host card games and parties here. Residual activity and conversations have been noted here in relation to Eddie. Shouts, screams, furniture moving, and the sounds of stomping or dancing have been reported during these odd occurrences.
Reported in the same areas, a pair of young girls are said to play and run around. Many visitors actually bring them toys and gifts as a sign of respect. These toys have been said to light up on their own, and the girls are rumored to play hide and seek with unexpecting visitors.
During our first investigation, we experienced a high amount of verbal communication particularly in the servant quarters, parlor, and attic. We also captured some visual activity in the form of a photograph looking in from outside to what appeared to be a pair of young girls watching from a window. Up in the attic, we also recorded in video what looked like a pair of eyes peering out from behind a pier as if playing hide and seek.
We were lucky enough to return at the last minute and explore and investigate the mansion with our guide Karita from Hidden Marietta. Our luck continued into the night as another member of Hidden Marietta, Viva, stopped by to say hi. As always, these ladies were extremely hospitable and knowledgeable.
We had arrived right around 6:45 PM and unloaded our equipment and took our tour of the building, well those of us who were not there during the first investigation. The investigation began a little after 8:00 PM and it continued through about 2:30 AM.
Throughout the evening in the Anchorage Mansion, we used our arsenal of equipment and utilized live social media feeds to allow viewers to help us pinpoint certain things they saw during our investigation. During the investigation, we carried a handheld camera and a cell phone to allow for the live stream. We utilized two recorders, one MEL meter, one K2 meter, one SB7 Spirit Box, one Rempod, one FLIR thermal imaging camera, one Phasma Box, one SLS camera, one EMF pump, four hardwired stationary cameras, and multiple IR lights.
Much like our first investigation, we experienced an unforgettable amount of other worldly activity throughout the mansion. During our set up, we all felt a significant heaviness in the Servant Quarters while the Tower and Attic did not seem to hold much of a different feeling. The Servant Quarters unique feeling held up throughout the night and our investigation, but the Tower and Attic changed significantly as we continued our investigation.
The majority of our evidence gathered throughout the evening was voice recorders both static as well as equipment based. Our visual evidence included some FLIR thermal images as well as screen videos recorded on the stationary cameras.
Based on the recorded evidence paired up with our personal experiences inside the Anchorage Mansion, we believe (and have recorded anomalies for the second time) that the mansion turned nursing home is a refuge for many of those who have passed on from inside the mansion as well as those who passed on outside of it but experienced both happiness and tragedies in it. These entities seem to stretch all through the mansion but our evidence showed that the locations with the greatest activity were the Servant Quarters, ICU Room, Tower, Parlor and Second Floor Hallway. The Eddie McTaggert Room and Attic seemed to hold a little energy above and beyond but these were more of fleeting sensations.
The Servant Quarters originally drew us in with the form of a shadow figure. We proceeded to capture a plethora of verbal activity here utilizing our Spirit Box. We were even instructed to make our way to the Attic from this room. Up in the Attic, we did receive a little communication but the main feeling we received here was to split the group up. Thankfully so because when we split, we separated into the ICU Room and the Parlor. The ICU Room provided us with even more verbal communication as well as yes/no communication via the flashlight. In this area we also managed to capture a FLIR thermal image of what appeared to be an entity sitting in a chair where the flashlight rested. As this occurred in the ICU Room, the Parlor was also active mainly thanks to the Spirit Box. When we returned later in the night, we received even more verbal communication as well as some light anomalies on our handheld camera. As we proceeded up the winding stairs toward the Tower, we did not expect much as we didn’t record any activity during our first investigation, but to our astonishment, we captured some verbal communication through the Phasma Box, some physical communication via a flashlight session, and even some odd lights moving on then back off of the investigators.
After a complete analysis of our evidence gathered during our overnight paranormal investigation of the Anchorage Mansion we attached these recordings, videos, and photographs. Everything we have attached, we feel we recorded some type of paranormal evidence and labeled them and their significance. Please let us know your thoughts and opinions after you listen, watch, and read through the evidence.
As always, you have been warned, some of this is not for the faint of heart and can be slightly explicit:
Setup / Pre-Investigation
As we set up our equipment in the side room, we ran a Facebook Live video to capture the house and property in its entirety. During this walk-through, we began to feel uneasy in the Servant Quarters. During the tail end of it, we did get the breathtaking view from the Tower overlooking the small but illuminated town of Marietta, Ohio, appropriately cast over with a full moon. Later in the night, heard in our stationary camera recording the security camera footage, there were footsteps and shuffling sounds (See the Security Footage section).

- This was a simple introduction and walk through of the old mansion.
Eddie McTaggert Room
On the second floor, we were drawn to this simple room due to an odd feeling of a presence. Aside from its beautiful marble fireplace, there was nothing else that really caught our attention in the room.
This room’s history isn’t completely known but it was understood to be Eliza’s former room (not for long) but overshadowed and named after the mansion’s next owner, Eddie McTaggert. This bedroom has been rumored to give people uncomfortable feelings as if someone is watching them from the hallway and is known to hold strange sounds as if someone is pacing back and forth. It is said that Eliza will visit this area on occasion, even spotted peering aimlessly out the windows. During our first investigation a few years ago, we captured voices, calming and gentle, but the investigation turned slightly as we spotted a phantom handprint on the window and were even touched and lured out into the hall by the outline of a shadow figure.
During our time here, we recorded a few words produced via the Ovilus and one investigator had his name repeated to him while utilizing the Spirit Box. The group was eventually told to “Get out” and even instructed to head toward the Attic. The group ultimately split up during our time here to follow a shadow spotted fleeing the area, down the hall, toward the Servant Quarters.

- There was nothing out of the ordinary here.
Recording 2 – EVP:
- During some time using the Ovilus, there were a plethora of words that appeared here: “Sympathy,” “Casino,” Closet,” and “Union.” After we thought about this a little during our review, we could clearly match up these words to specific areas or occurrences in the mansion.
- Sympathy – the past life of the mansion as a nursing home or even Eliza’s tragic end to her life could both be associated here.
- Casino – the Attic was used for some to gamble, playing cards, poker, etc. and this could be related to this area.
- Closet – the small closet inside the room did give us some odd feelings and no one wanted their back to it, so it’s a possibility that there was a spirit lingering there.
- Union – the Parlor was used to join couples in marriage, as this could be considered a union, this is perhaps what this was in reference to.
- Around the 2:16 mark, Dan can be heard spotting a shadow down the hall. Derrick and Julz followed him to the Servant Quarters from there, leaving Gabe, Raya, and Kayden to continue the investigation in Eddie’s Room.

Servant Quarters
This room drew us in immediately, possibly from our first investigation but there were only half of us in attendance that were present during the first time around. This room seems to hold all sorts of activity, from past energies of servants to runaway slaves hidden here temporarily to the patients and administration from the nursing home era. The area originally held up to five cramped living quarters for servants but was converted into an administration office and ICU when the nursing home took over. This location has been said to host phantom voices, some residual, some intelligent. Banging sounds and footsteps have been commonplace and there is even one particular spirit who has been dubbed “Casanova” due to his fondness, well obsession is more like it, with women. This entity has been known to grab females hair and grab them unexpectedly. During our first investigation, we recorded an entire intelligent conversation with what appeared to be a former servant. There were also some strange noises like a growl, laughter, and a banging sound.
While investigating the Servant Quarters, we were drawn to this area following a shadow. During our first time spent here (with Dan, Derrick, and Raya), we only had the handheld camera and experienced footsteps and cold spots. The second time around (with Gabe, Julz, and Kayden), we captured voices via the spirit box and Kayden getting his hair touched. The voices here seemed intelligent as if responses to questions and even told us where to go and who was in the room.

- At this point we moved toward the ICU Room.
- Continued in the ICU Room.
Attic
Up in this open area, the room once held card games and parties. It was also said to be one of the young girls favorite places to run around and play. Many guests to the mansion bring toys and dolls for these girls to play with in the afterlife. They are strewn across the floor and are said to move and light up on occasion without any worldly explanation. During our last investigation, we received a lot of Ovilus communication as well as some Spirit Box verbal recordings. The most intriguing part, however, was that of the shadow and pair of eyes that peered out around the columns numerous times as we captured this on video.
The entire group came together here, including our guide, Karita. We ran a simple EVP session, and aside from Dan getting his arm touched, there was not much happening. We decided to split up once more. Dan, Raya, and Derrick headed out to a different location; the ICU Room in the Servant Quarters. The remainder of the group (Gabe, Kayden, Julz, Karita) stuck around and ran the Spirit Box which produced a few calls for help and as well as quite a few yes and no responses to simple answers.

ICU Room – Servant Quarters
This area was a continuation of the Servant Quarters down the hall and is also home to the pesky spirit of “Cassanova.” During our first investigation, we didn’t spend much time here, nor did we get any specific feelings about the room. The ICU Room is fairly empty aside from some old graffiti and, this time, seemed to pull us in after Derrick walked down the dark hallway and saw a black form in the far corner.
Derrick, Dan, and Raya began their time here with just the flashlight and a recorder. Luckily, Raya was able to record some of the flashlight activity on her cell phone. The trio managed to get that this was an older man who was a servant, possibly a butler. We utilized the Phasma Box later on and seemed to record a full conversation with this same spirit.
Photos:
- We captured what appeared to be a cold spot sitting in the same chair that the flashlight was resting in via the FLIR thermal image camera.
Recorder 1 – EVP:
- We mainly utilized the flashlight and captured some communication during this time.
- As we explained the scenario and asked if they could light up the flashlight, at 1:27, it lit then dimmed.
- At 2:50, the flashlight lit up as we asked if they’re still with us and turned it off again at 2:55 after we asked them to turn it off.
- We wanted to reconfirm that someone was with us and asked them to light it again, and at 3:13, the flashlight lit then turned off at 3:22 after we asked them to turn it off.
- After we asked if it’s okay that we ask them some questions, the light turned on at 3:50 then off at 4:00.
- The light turned back on at 4:30 after we asked them to light the flashlight if they’re a male. As we asked them to turn it back off, at 4:40, it dimmed.
- As we noticed a figure in the SLS camera, the flashlight blinked on and off at 5:54.
- We introduced ourselves, then the light turned on at 6:23 then off at 6:40 after we asked them to turn it off.
- As we asked if they’re a servant, at 7:00, the flashlight turned on then off again at 7:05.
- We then asked if they’re older than 40. The light turned on at 7:25 then off at 7:45 after we asked them to turn it off.
- The light turned on at 8:07 after we asked if they’re a butler then off at 8:12.
- At 8:20, the light flashed on and off as if reconfirming their position.
- We proceeded to begin another question, but we were cut off after we began by asking if they died. The light turned on at 8:40 then off at 8:45.
- As we mentioned that they didn’t let us finish asking the question, we continued the question by asking if they died inside the mansion. At 8:55, the flashlight turned on then off at 9:00.
- At 10:30, after some silence, the light turned on as if to remind us that they’re still there. We asked if they could turn the light off, and at 11:04, it shut off.
- We asked if they could tell us their name, and at 11:21, the light turned on followed by footsteps in the hallway at 11:23 and then it turned off at 11:25.
- As we were in the middle of discussing the Attic, at 11:44, the light turned on and off.
- We asked if they liked their time in the mansion but the light did not turn on. However, we asked if they were upset or angry and the light flickered on and off at 12:40.
- After asking if they could interact with us a different way and touch the light, at 13:58, the light turned on.
- At 14:10, the SLS showed another figure in the chair where the flashlight sat.
- We asked if they could turn the light off, and at 14:35, it turned off.
- Bluntly, we asked if they’re the one who has been named “Cassanova.” At 15:35, the light turned on. We asked if they could turn the light off and they obliged at 16:06.
- We asked if they liked Raya around 16:20, and the light did not turn on.
- As we proceeded to joke and argue, and the light turned on at 16:43.
- We couldn’t figure out why but asked them to turn it off, and at 17:25, it did.
- We once again asked if they’re the one who is named “Cassanova,” and at 17:47, a strange breath can be heard.
- At 19:00, after we got irritated and jokingly said go fuck yourself, the light turned on then off again at 19:15.
- We said that they could make themselves known by touching one of us, and at 19:18, the light flickered on and off.
- After we asked if that meant they liked us, at 19:27, the flashlight turned on then off at 19:45.
- We attempted to ask another question but the light turned on at 19:52 as if cutting him off. We asked them to turn it off again and it turned off at 20:11.

Tower
We ventured up to the Tower, if nothing else to get a nice view of the town, which we most certainly got, and showed anyone who was watching the Facebook Live video at that point. This is one of Eliza’s favorite places to spend her time, and as time went on, this is where male visitors congregated to play cards and smoke cigars. In time, after the nursing home took over then subsequently was abandoned, a woman in a flowing dress has been seen up here from time to time, staring out the windows at the gorgeous views of the town. Footsteps and banging noises have been reported in this spot but these claims have never been debunked. During our first investigation of the mansion, we didn’t get much captured here, nor did we spend that much time up here.
Even though we didn’t capture much during our quiet EVP session, the communication did seem to open up once we started our Phasma Box. We recorded a decent amount of communication here, all very cordial and welcoming. Whatever was with us also enjoyed playing with the flashlight. We believe we either encountered Eliza up here or the little girls who play in the Attic and possibly ventured up the Tower.

Parlor
This area has been one of the more predominantly and widely used areas of the house. Originally just one of the parlor/sitting rooms, this open room was used for opposite sides of life including both marriages and funerals. With the odd array of energies stemming from both happiness and sadness, it’s no wonder that this room has been said to house odd remnants of the past like footsteps, heavy breathing, crying, and doors slamming. Eliza has also been said to move about this room and even be seen as a full body apparition in the bay window area. The last time we investigated this area, we didn’t get any verbal communication but we did note that we heard footsteps and felt the presence of someone else in there with us.
We spent two different sessions here. The first was almost a breather after the Servant Quarters but did produce much as far as paranormal evidence goes. The next time, we returned essentially to end our night and utilized the Spirit Box. During this second session, we captured flashlight activity as well as some verbal communication including some of our names repeated to us and “Yes” and “No” responses. The SLS also showed us a figure standing near the window opening next to Raya.

After an in depth review of all of the evidence we captured during our evening spent at the Anchorage Mansion for a paranormal investigation, in our opinion, we can definitively determine that the old mansion turned nursing home is host to a multitude of spirits all throughout. Based on our experiences from our first investigation, we had high expectations to capture at least some minor activity, and to our surprise, the time spent in the mansion far exceeded those initial hopes. We do believe that we captured both intelligent and residual communication as well as a few physical experiences including a spirit touching us, reaching for our hair, and even experimenting with our flashlight. We also captured a few images both via the stationary cameras and some light anomalies as well as through the FLIR thermal camera.
With all of the history tied to the mansion from the tragic loss of Eliza to escaping slaves even to renovating the mansion into a nursing home (which there’s no doubt there were deaths that came along with that lifespan), it appears as though there has been energy left behind by spirits who have not fully transitioned into the afterlife or who have returned to their place of extreme happiness or sadness. Some of these spirits are simply still living their lives in the Anchorage Mansion, possibly not even realizing that they have passed away, while others are well aware of their expiration and just do not want to leave. Some of these particular spirits have asked for help or simply want to make us aware of their existence and past struggles while others want to play or tease visitors with toys or noises. The more common activity appeared to be intelligent and willing to communicate but there was seemingly some residual activity that we feel we experienced in the form of bits and pieces of conversations and noises like knocks, taps, or footsteps.
Through and through, the majority of the energy felt positive in nature and most spirits who we encountered were open and willing to communicate. This communication occurred verbally (via the Spirit Box and Phasma Box) and physically (via the flashlight activity and physical touches). The only location that felt darker and heavier was the Servant Quarters leading into the ICU Room. Even though we did record a few names, we were also told to leave and get out on multiple occasions both verbally and physically.
We strongly believe that there was clear evidence to support the claim that the Anchorage Mansion holds multiple spiritual energies inside its walls. These spirits vary from those which refused to move on to others who do not even realize that they have passed on. Our evidence shows that there is both intelligent and residual energies linked to these spirits and the mansion itself. Whether it may be former servants, slaves, owners, children, or simply guests, these spirits must have felt and held the Anchorage Mansion in close and important regard as they have claimed their stake in their forever home in the afterlife.
