Investigation

Galion, Ohio is a quaint little blue collar town hidden in the shadow of Mansfield, only about 20 minutes away. The town holds an older, blue collar feel to it and is beautifully preserved; mainly thanks to the residents of the town who understand and respect the historic value. The town of Galion provides a nostalgic feeling, that of being safe, comfortable, and friendly in neighborhood where no one locked their doors and everyone was friends. Located nearly in the heart of town, the gorgeously preserved (still in construction to restore its’ glory days) rests the mansion of the Gill House. The house was actually atop of the original house that was built on that same property. However, instead of tearing down the former house, it was moved about 50 yards away, across the driveway and still stands today!

 

 

The mansion was passed down to three different owners before the current ownership group purchased the mansion and property. The Gill family, whose family line has been in the Galion area since 1818, were the firsts to own the property dating all the way back to 1855. Bloomer and Neville Gill relocated the original house and built the current standing Gill House from 1902-1904. They lived in the mansion, luring their popular friends (such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John Deer, and Harvey Firestone) to visit the area regularly, until they sold it to Dean and Bonnie Talbot in 1926. During this time, the mansion became quite a hotspot for local parties and attractions like movies which were shown in the home. Dean’s father passed away in 1956 and his mother, Eva, moved into the house shortly after. As Bonnie and her mother in law did not get along, the couple basically built a wall up the stairwell essentially cutting off the second floor from the rest of the house. Dean died unexpectedly leaving his beloved wife and his mother to live in the home together. Eva died in her bedroom in 1956, and Bonnie opted to move on and sold the mansion that same year to the Hesbys’. The couple lived peacefully in only a portion of the 6,000 square foot mansion, really only on the first floor. The Hesbys’ then moved on and sold the home to the current historical ownership in Preserving Galion.

Most of the stories associated with this home have been positive and on the tame side of things. Children, Eva returning, and even Bloomer looking over his home have all been relatively common stories surfacing from the paranormal aspect. The second floor, basement, and the attic have been more common to hot spots for the paranormal. Eva’s bedroom, where she passed away, and the master bedroom on the second floor have produced stories of footsteps, voices, and even shadows. Most of these are associated with Eva herself and children who apparently spent time in the mansion; whether they lived there or not has yet to be determined. In the attic, children have been heard playing in the old and no longer active pool and shooting a basketball into the old hoop which still stands. Their laughter has been said to echo down the stairwell. In the main room in the basement, there has been a plethora of activity ranging from electronics switching on and off, to flashlights lighting up and dying to a deep voice, and shadow of who some believe is the former native American who lived on the land before the Gills known as Solomon. The Gill’s son Jimmy has been heard and felt in this area on the occasion as well.

 

 

Combine all of these stories with the little known fact that there was once a cemetery out front of the property which was covered up by brick and pavement for the road (the bodies were never exhumed or moved; just simply covered), we were more than excited to spend the night at the old mansion. Around 6:00 PM we managed to make our way through town and find our way to the driveway behind the Gill House and right next to the original Gill home, which was moved. We had a great tour guide in Mary and Tom. They told us stories of personal experiences and showed us some incredible historical photographs of the families and the home. Brian later relieved them of their duties and shared even more historical facts with us. We began setting up cameras and equipment around 7:00 PM and began our investigation right around 8:00 PM. We were given permission to stay until about 2:00 AM but wrapped up around 1:30 AM to clean up and ensure we were out the door on time. During the investigation, we were joined by Cindy, a medium, and her assistant, Roger. We utilized nearly all of our equipment throughout the evening. We had: four hardwired cameras set up to our monitoring system, one stationary camera, one handheld camera, one K2 meter, one SB7 spirit box, one Ovilus, two Rempods, one recorder, one FLIR thermal camera, two IR lights, one temperature gauge, one EMF pump, one Phasma Box, and one laser grid pen.

Throughout our evening, we experienced moments of paranormal activity, even during our set up. There were changes in the air of the rooms after we had toured, odd noises sounding like children humming in the basement as we set up, and utilizing both the Phasma Box and Spirit Box during our investigation; we captured plenty of communication. During one moment in particular on the second floor in Eva’s Room, we captured a thermal video of what appeared to be someone, or something, peaking its head in and out as we attempted to communicate with Eva. We spotted shadows moving in our peripheral vision and light anomalies flashing across cameras throughout the evening, in particular, when the flashlights would light up seemingly on their own or the Rempods would activate. We recorded some names during our investigation. At one moment in the attic, we felt as though we were being laughed at and mimicked by children. The most active locations were the 2^nd floor in Eva’s Room, the Master Bedroom, the Basement, and the Attic. We received clear communication in all of these locations via the Phasma Box and the Spirit Box. Light anomalies appeared in the second floor as we attempted to communicate through flashlight and Rempod sessions. Lights would appear over top of the devices as they turned on, then left them as they turned off. While in Eva’s Room we captured what appeared to be Rempod activity. However, we think there was a breeze which was setting it off. After we moved the Rempod outside of the breezeway, it appeared to be alerted again, even after we tested it for a breeze.

 

 

Below are recordings, videos, pictures, and thermal images from our overnight investigation at the Gill House. We labeled locations throughout as to communication or paranormal evidence we believe we captured.  Once you listen to the recordings and watch the videos, reach out and let us know what you think.

Basement

 Our first stop on this warm and muggy night was the Basement, we mainly chose to begin here to cool down. Shadows have been spotted down here and two spirits have been discovered roaming through the area. The Native American, Solomon, has been seen here and his name has been spoken in this area. The other is that of Boomer’s son Jimmy. He is namely the one who plays games with flashlights and electronics in the area, especially when cameras and other devices are left alone. Mainly because of him, flashlights have been turned on and off and this is a hot spot for flashlight sessions where investigators will attempt to communicate through spirits based on a flashlight left alone, on and off being different answers to questions.

 

 

In our first EVP session, we sat around the center of the room. Unfortunately, we did not capture much aside from footsteps and a feeling of someone hiding in the corner behind us. After that, we conducted a Spirit Box session where we successfully captured phrases, names, and had regular Rempod activity. We did return here later in the evening to again use the Spirit Box and recorded a few phrases, but we successfully completed a few flashlight sessions and captured an odd thermal photo in the corner where we had felt a presence earlier.

 

Photos:

• The photo of the door that we had thought we heard open slightly shows the cracked door, which we later confirmed with the owners that it was closed previously.

 

 

• We also pictured a screen shot of a flashlight session from the Basement. As this small green light anomaly floated above the flashlight it turned on. As it left, the flashlight turned off.

 

 

• The FLIR thermal image shows a very odd image of what appears to be a head and shoulders in the corner where we felt a presence earlier in the night. We could not duplicate this or figure out the color and heat differential.

• We heard “Yup, you’re welcome” at :03 after we said thank you for speaking with us.
• After Dan asked about a noise he heard (which turned out to be Cindy taking a deep breath) we captured a question of “What happened?” at :51.

• After some silence, we asked if they were still with us. At :01, we heard “Hi.”

• Oddly enough we heard “Help” at :02 which was unprompted by anything we said previously.

• As we began to speak and as if cutting us off, we heard “Get out” at :02.

• Previously to this moment, Dan heard a squeaking noise. We tested some things and found out it was the sound the doorknob made in the opposite room. As if a voice was responding and interacting with Dan, at :15, we heard “Like this?”

• As we prepared to leave and pack up our mobile equipment, at :03, we captured “Stand up.”

• After we returned to the basement later in the night, we began with a flashlight session which prompted us to continue to ask yes/no questions. We explained that in order to speak with us they, had to turn the flashlight on and off. At about :13, we heard “I’m trying.”

• As silence befell us and we gathered our breath, we captured “Cindy” at :06 as if the spirit wanted to speak with her.

• The flashlight continued to turn on and off as we asked questions, and after we explained that we want to get to know them, we heard “Heart attack” at :07.

• We asked if they know what year it is, and at :05, we heard “20” but that could be their time of 1920 or referring to our current time of 2020.

• As we powered the camera back on, the bars were still at full capacity.
• Once the power switched on, the Rempod was already activated.
• At 1:04, the Rempod stopped after had we asked them to step back.
• During this session we recorded the word “Mistress” on the Ovilus.
• After we asked if they’re the mistress, we received the word “Maybe” on the Ovilus.

Handheld Video 3 – Spirit Box:

• After we asked why they are here, we heard “Work” at 2:53.
• The Rempod went off at 3:25 and stopped at 3:45 after we asked them to step back.
• We heard “Yup, you’re welcome” at 3:40 after we thanked them for speaking with us.
• After Dan asked about a noise he heard, we heard “What happened?” at 4:26.
• We asked if they were still with us and at 5:12 we heard “Hi.”
• The Rempod sounded at 7:26 momentarily.
• After Cindy mentioned she felt something behind her, the Rempod went off at 8:08 then stopped at 8:20 after we asked them to step back.
• The Rempod went off again at 8:25 then back off at 8:36 after we asked them to stop.
• This was repeated at 8:41 and went off at 8:51 then once again at 8:53 and stopped at 9:17. We began to believe someone was playing with it.
• The Rempod once again was activated at 9:19 and stopped at 9:30 only to repeat this at 9:34 lasting until 9:36.
• Oddly enough we heard “Help” at 10:38 which was unprompted.
• There was an inaudible word captured at 14:31.
• After we asked them to touch the Rempod, at 14:48, it was activated.
• As we began to speak and as if cutting us off, we heard “Get out” at 15:23.
• At 16:43, Dan heard a squeaking noise. We tested some things and found out it was the sound the doorknob made in the opposite room.
• As if a voice was responding and interacting with Dan, at 16:56, we heard “Like this?”
• As we prepared to leave and at 18:29, we captured “Stand up.”
• After we had shut the recorder off, the camera recorded the word “Warm” at 20:44 right before we shut it off.

Handheld Video 4 – Spirit Box:

• After we returned to the basement later in the night, we began with a flashlight session and, at 5:00, the flashlight turned on then back off at 5:21.
• At about 7:18, we heard “I’m trying” then the flashlight turned on at 7:50 after we asked if they are a male.
• At 8:56, we captured “Cindy” as if the spirit wanted to speak with her.
• After we asked if they were an adult, the flashlight turned on at 9:55.
• We explained we want to get to know them, we heard “Heart attack” at 14:17.
• We asked if they know what year it is, and at 15:45, we heard “20.”
• As we prepared to pack up and move on, the flashlight once again turned on at 16:35.
• We asked them to turn the light off if they wanted us to leave, and at 17:36, it shut off.

2^nd Floor – Eva’s Room

This bedroom has aptly been named Eva’s Room since she passed away in that very room. There has been a slew of activity in this room from voices to footsteps even to shadows. Not just in the bedroom either, the Kitchenette on one side and the hallway on the other side have both produced movement and shadowy figures moving about them.

 

 

We believe that we experienced one of these figures peering in at us from the Kitchenette area. This was captured via thermal image camera and may be one of our best captures to date. It shows what looks like a head peaking in the room from the Kitchenette then pulling back so it doesn’t get noticed. This happened multiple times before it stopped. As we recorded, we simply froze in our tracks!

 

Photos:

• The normal flash photographs did not produce any paranormal evidence, but this is a screen shot of the thermal image video of what appears to be the head of a figure peaking in at us as we conducted a Phasma Box session.

 

 

• We also captured a video of a light anomaly passing over the Rempod, seemingly setting it off.

 

 

Recording 1 – EVP:

• We didn’t capture much aside from some Rempod activity. This occurred at 5:10, 5:40, 6:30 and stopped after we asked it to step away at 6:50.
• The Rempod again lit up at 7:28 after we asked if they could acknowledge the way we want to communicate via yes or no answers using the Rempod.
• It went off again after we asked it to step away at the 8:14 marker.

Recording 2 – Phasma Box:

• After we asked the spirit to tell us their name we heard what sounded like “Denise” at :03 then “Roger” at :07, possibly referring to one of the investigators.
• The voice continued on and we captured “I’m friends with her” at :17.

Recording 3 – Phasma Box:

• At :05 we heard what sounded like a command of “Sit down.”
• Very quietly through the Phasma Box (possibly not even utilizing the Phasma Box, it’s still unclear at this point) we heard “Ask again” at :24.

Recording 4 – Phasma Box:

• One of our more interesting and entertaining conversations involved us ordering pizza…and possibly sharing with whoever was with us.
• After we discussed ordering some pizza, we heard “Pizza” repeated back to us at :03.
• At :13, after we asked if they want some, we heard “I want some.”
• We continued to be welcoming and said we’ll buy some for them too and, at :27, we captured what sounded like “Peperoni” and then “Sausage” at :53.
• After we got confused whether they liked peperoni or sausage, at 1:54, we heard “Sausage” repeated to us.
• We told them we could order it for them, and at 3:04, we heard “Order it.”
• Unfortunately, we never got around to ordering pizza for our new friends…

Recording 5 – Phasma Box:

• As we transitioned the conversation, we asked if they’re a family member. We heard what sounded like “Most of the day” at :05 as if they were maybe a butler or employee of the family.

Recording 6 – Phasma Box:

• We continued with that thought process and asked if they worked at the mansion to which we captured “Revived” at :04 followed by a pause and “For centuries now” possibly referring to a grounds keeper or family doctor stuck here in the afterlife.

Recording 7 – Phasma Box:

• We asked for the name of who was in the room with us and at first we thought we heard “Eva” in the moment but after cleaning up the recording we believe it said “Patience” at :03.

• We explained that we were informed that a group who investigated a week before had a conversation with them in that room. We then heard “Spirit Box” at :08 as if explaining that’s how they spoke to the previous group.

• We then heard two phrases which were unprompted. The first was “We’ll show you” at :05 and the second was “He’s controlling” at :10 as if someone was trying to explain that someone else was there with them.

Recording 10 – Phasma Box:

• Right before this and continuing through it (only turning off afterward), the Rempod was alerted. At :02, we captured “Shut up” but we’re unsure if that was directed toward us or the spirit activating the Rempod.

• After we explained that we felt something behind us, we heard “Dan” at :01.
• “Behind you” came through at about :06.
• As if someone was hiding something, we heard “She found me out” at :47.

• We thanked them for coming and speaking with us and heard “You’re welcome” at :04.
• As Cindy described herself feeling pressure, we heard “It’s physical” at :17.

• Before this recording, the Rempod was alerted and a light anomaly was seen moving above it. We proceeded to ask if it was Eva and if she died in that room. We captured “I can show you” at :13.

• We responded thanking them for speaking with us to which we captured “Appreciate it” at :16.
• As a few voices came through simultaneously, we asked if they could let one person talk to us. As if confused, we heard “What?” at :39 and “They’re going” at :51.
• At :58, as if they were suddenly irritated, we heard “Get away from us.”

Recording 18 – EVP:

• Later in the night, we returned to Eva’s Room to try to get clarification on the thermal video we captured earlier at the end of our first session. We began with an EVP session.
• At about 2:00, we heard a clicking noise when we were in the room but it did not translate into the recorder for some reason.
• The handheld camera completely died at about 4:16 but when it was turned back on it still had two bars full of battery life.
• After we asked them to make a noise, we heard a knocking at about 4:52 when we were there, but again, unfortunately this did not translate onto the recorder.

• We again utilized the Phasma Box when we returned. We immediately captured multiple voices but asked them to speak one at a time. At :07, we heard “Acknowledgement” as if understanding our request.
• We heard what sounded like either “Stairs” or Scares” at :28.

• Even though we barely began, we heard “Please get out” at :03.
• At about :26, we captured “Stop” a pause then “That’s nasty.” This was possibly a residual haunting or phrase we captured which lead us to believe that the first phrase was also residual.

• As if we were interrupted something going on in the room, we heard “Lost” at :03.
• We asked if Eva was with us and, at :15, we heard what sounded like a female voice begin but get cut off by a male voice saying “No.”
• At :43, we captured the phrase “I’m her husband” as if this spirit was her husband or passed away before she moved in or someone else trying to control her.

• “Entrance” was heard at :09.
• After we said thank you for speaking with us, we captured “This is easy” at :27.

• At 1:07, we heard another phrase of “Are you in there?” followed by what seemed like a response of “Are you looking for me?” at 1:09.

• We felt we finally outstayed our welcome, not only in the room but also in the mansion when we heard three phrases, beginning with “Leave” at :02.

• We didn’t capture much aside from some Rempod activity which started at 4:30 by flashing on and off. This repeated at 5:00.
• At 5:50, it again turned on and stayed on this time until we asked it to step back which is when it turned off at 6:10.
• The Rempod again lit up at 6:48 after we asked if they could acknowledge the way we want to communicate via yes or no answers using the Rempod.
• It went off again after we asked it to step away at 7:34.

• We asked the spirit to tell us their name and we heard what sounded like “Denise” at 3:16 then “Roger” at 3:20.

• Quietly through the Phasma Box we heard “Ask again” at 4:37.
• One of our more interesting and entertaining conversations involved us ordering pizza…and possibly sharing with whoever was with us beginning after we discussed ordering some pizza, we heard “Pizza” repeated back to us at 4:56.
• At 5:06, after we asked if they want some, we heard “I want some.”
• We said we’ll buy some for them and, at 5:20, we captured “Peperoni” and then “Sausage” at 5:46.
• After we got confused whether they liked peperoni or sausage, at 6:47, we heard “Sausage” repeated to us.
• We told them we could order it for them, and at 7:57, we heard “Order it.”
• We asked if they’re a family member and heard “Most of the day” at 8:13.
• We asked if they worked at the mansion and we captured “Revived” at 8:27 followed by a pause and “For centuries now.”
• We asked for the name of who was in the room and we believe it said “Patience” at 8:56.
• We explained that we were informed that a group who investigated a week before had a conversation with them in that room. We then heard “Spirit Box” at 9:51 as if explaining that’s how they spoke to the previous group.
• At 10:01, the Rempod was alerted.
• We then heard “We’ll show you” at 10:38 and “He’s controlling” at 10:43.
• The Rempod was alerted at 11:26 just as the camera battery was drained.

• As we powered the camera back on, to full power again, the Rempod which was still going off, shut off.
• At :05, we captured “Shut up” but we’re unsure if that was directed toward us or the spirit activating the Rempod.
• The Rempod went on and off twice; once at :10 then again at :13.
• After we felt something behind us, we heard “Dan” at :35.
• “Behind you” came through at about :39.
• As if someone was hiding something, we heard “She found me out” at 1:20.
• We thanked them for coming and speaking with us and heard “You’re welcome” at 4:17 followed by “its physical” at 4:30 as Cindy described feeling pressure.
• The Rempod was alerted just as a light anomaly passed above it at 6:17.
• We asked if it was Eva in the room and captured “I can show you” at 6:51.
• “Didn’t mean to” was heard at 7:43 followed by the Rempod flashing on at 7:47 and again at 8:28.
• “Cindy” was heard at 8:39 as she began to speak followed by the Rempod being alerted at 8:50.

• As we packed up, we caught another unprompted phrase of “They called me trollop” at 2:05.
• Finally, we explained that we didn’t feel like they wanted us to leave, so if they really did want us to leave to light the Rempod up once more. At 2:41, the Rempod was alerted.

Handheld Camera 5 – EVP:

• After we returned to Eva’s Room we began with an EVP session. We did not run the camera the entire time but once we did turn it on, it immediately drained. However, when it was powered back up, it still had two bars of battery life.
• We asked them to make a noise and heard a knocking at about :16 when we were there, but this did not translate onto the video camera.

2^nd Floor – Master Bedroom

 Not much is really known about this bedroom aside from the fact that the spirits here are active with equipment, the flashlight in particular. There have been said to be children playing in here and that Bloomer and Nellie return to this area every so often. However, due to the playfulness of the flashlights and curiosity of the equipment, this has been more so associated with their children rather than the original owners.

 

 

We managed to get responses via the flashlight and even record communication regarding what the spirit liked to do in their past life like reading books, watching shows, and going fishing. We do believe we captured the essence of one of the Gill children returning here in a more pure and innocent form.

• Our regular flash photography didn’t capture anything out of the ordinary, but we do have some stills of the videos of the flashlight sessions that occurred here.

 

 

 

Recorder 1 – EVP:

• There wasn’t much here in the form of verbal communication, however, you can hear us utilizing the flashlight; asking questions and getting responses.
• At 3:05, the flashlight clicked on and then turned off at 3:21 after we asked them to turn it off.
• After we asked them to turn the flashlight on, at 4:15, the light turns on while a light anomaly moves into it then back out of it when it turns off moments later.
• We asked if they were a family member, and to turn the flashlight on for yes. At 5:43, the light turned on.
• After we asked if they were an adult, the light turned on slightly and dimly at 6:05 but then fully on after we asked if they were a teen at 6:43.
• It stayed on until we asked them to turn it off to which they obliged at 7:05.
• At 8:18, the flashlight turned on after we asked if they come here for special occasions then back off at 8:38 after we asked them to turn it back off.
• We were about to ask another question but at 10:10 the flashlight turned on as if they were getting impatient.
• At 10:33, our Walkie Talkie sprung to life with no one controlling it on the other end. However, we do believe this could just be an incident where there were crossed signals with another device.
• There was a light anomaly on the wall which we wanted to investigate further but at 11:40, the flashlight turned on essentially eliminating the light on the wall and it turned off again at 11:55 as if someone was playing games with us.

• An odd light floats into the flashlight, seemingly turning it on. As the flashlight turns off, the light appears to exit it.

• The camera had died during our EVP session and was not turned back on until halfway through the spirit box session.
• We asked what else they liked to do and if they enjoyed things like fairs, we captured “Read” at :46.
• At 2:17, the flashlight was turned on after we asked if they liked to be outside and hunt and fish.
• We asked them to turn the light off, and at 2:49, the light was turned off.
• Oddly enough, the Walkie Talkie went off out of nowhere at 3:29.

Attic

In the attic, there have been a multitude of stories dating back to when the area was used as a swimming pool for the neighborhood kids and even after it was converted into a small basketball court. The original basketball hoop which has an inscription dating back to the Gill’s time there still stands to this day. Children have been heard playing here whether it’s splashing around in the old pool or shooting hoops. The squeaking of shoes and giggling have echoed down the stairs as well. Bloomer has also been said to walk around here from time to time just keeping an eye on things. His footfalls have been heard and his shadow has even been seen pacing from side to side.

 

 

We set up our stationary camera here to record all evening but with the fan running (God knows we needed it in that heat) it was difficult to hear anything else. We did not seem to capture anything out of the ordinary, however. As we made our way up to the Attic to conduct our sessions, we heard a banging noise on the top of the stairwell outside the Attic door. While conducted an EVP and Phasma Box session, we did get the flashlight to light up and recorded what did sound like children speaking with us and even making fun of us (Derrick in particular for his fear of bats).  Toward the end, it did seem like they loosened up and we even recorded then asking if they can “Accompany” us after we left.

• “It’s really not” was captured at 18:16 after we mentioned it was loud.
• As we explained how to use the flashlight and Rempod, we heard “This is stupid” at 19:30 only for it the flashlight to light up right after.
• After lighting the flashlight, we captured “This is fun” at 20:19.
• As we prepared to leave and asked them to give us a sign if they wanted us to leave, we were questioned with “Is this what you want?” at 21:47 followed by the commands of “Go” at 21:57 and “Accompany you” at 22:23.

After we reviewed the evidence from our overnight paranormal investigation of the Gill House in Galion, Ohio, we can positively conclude that the mansion is indeed a host to many spirits throughout the house and the property. Some of our experiences produced names while others helped explain the lifestyles of the family and the personalities of others, even if they weren’t necessarily family members. The thermal imaging camera helped us capture possibly some of our best evidence with a head peaking around the corner in Eva’s Room and a head and shoulders in the basement.

The most active locations in the Gill House would include the 2^nd floor in Eva’s Room and the Master Bedroom, the Basement, and the Attic the Basement and each gave us a plethora of different energies and experiences. The 2^nd floor gave off different feelings of both welcoming and inviting where the spirits wanted to communicate but also on the flip side, after wearing out our welcome, we seemed to feel more negative energy wanted us to leave. The Basement was an odd combination where it felt as if someone was hiding in the corner (as we also captured a thermal photo there) almost watching over whoever was communicating with us in the center of the room. The attic was much more of a playful and cheerful feel. It definitely felt as if children were still playing up there and even wanted us to join in.

 

 

There are so many different energies and activities in the Gill House that seem to be stuck here like children of the Gills returning in their purest form to employees of the mansion when they still had butlers and working hands end even to the family including that of the next generation owners with the mother-in-law Eva still residing in her place of death. The darkness also seems to be hidden here in the form of some type of controlling energy and even someone trying to keep secrets hidden even in the afterlife. Regardless of the type of hauntings experienced, it’s safe to say that the Gill House is the final resting place and still home to quite a variety of spirits throughout both the gorgeous mansion and its’ surrounding property.
