Investigation

 The small town of Martinsburg, West Virgina is a beautifully preserved historic location that not many travelers know about. The town itself gives you a quaint notion of stepping back in time, complete with a plethora of shops and restaurants to keep locals and travelers busy. However, tucked away at the far end of town sits the historic and well-kept former train yard known as Martinsburg Roundhouse. About 30 minutes south of Hagerstown, Maryland, this old railroad hub used to be a main intersection for trains going every direction imaginable. For this reason, the town and the train yard were highly contested during the bloody conflict of the Civil War. The town actually changed hands 37 times between the Union and Confederate armies!

 

 

Due to the unwelcomed popularity and death tolls of this location the Confederates, led by Thomas Jonathon “Stonewall” (not yet given that nickname) Jackson, burnt down the original roundhouse and dismantled countless engines and train cars. The war left a bloody wake in its path and took a toll on the economy of the town. But luckily the new nation granted the town money to help rebuild the rail yard and, with that funding, the station grew in size and production value. One of the new roundhouses was even build directly over top of the original. It took some time for the town to pull itself up and out of the depression that the Civil War caused; but it was successful and became a main stop along the B&O railway once again. Even though the production center and railroad hub shut down in 1988, it left plenty of success stories and horrible tragedies for future generations to share tales of for the foreseeable endless future. To this day, trains still pass right along the old station and has a train stop right next to the old roundhouse.

Stories of macabre tragedy and gut-wrenching deaths plague the old brick buildings and the property encapsulated by the black iron wrought fencing. Tales of Civil War soldiers are tragic in their own right, but then add the countless deaths of slave workers/children and the Martinsburg Roundhouse really twists the knife in those who are fascinated with history and the supernatural. There are stories of fog and smoke that move around the property. This is said to stretch from the leftover energy of the soldiers battling here to phantom fires that continue to burn down the old roundhouse for all eternity. There have been tales of horse clomping to children’s laughter outside the building which ties into the story of the Irish Brigade who during the Civil War lost control of their horses and the sleds built out of old train cars; which smashed into numerous children one fateful evening. The sounds of machinery has been heard as if the old workers are still completing projects and fixing up broken down trains.

 

 

Combine all of these stories with the historic value of the location, we were more than excited to spend the night at the old roundhouse. A little after 7:00 PM we managed to weave through town and find our way to the lower lot where the original buildings still stand. We were lucky enough to be greeted and toured by the fantastic Mike Giovannelli. Mike told us stories of his personal experiences and showed us some incredible photographs of the paranormal which occurred on site. We began setting up cameras and equipment around 8:00 PM and began our investigation right around 9:00 PM. We were given permission to stay until about 3:00 AM but ultimately wrapped up around 2:00 AM and hung out with Mike, his wife Spring, and their friend Harris from the Mid-Atlantic Paranormal Investigations just exchanging stories and hearing about their great adventures! During the investigation, we were joined by Cindy, our resident medium, and first-time investigator, Roger. We utilized nearly all of our equipment but with the location being so large, we were on the move a lot and it took some time to set some things up properly. We had four hardwired cameras set up to our monitoring system, one stationary camera, one handheld camera, one K2 meter, one SB7 spirit box, one Ovilus, two Rempods (one of which we left by a stationary camera all night), one recorder, one FLIR thermal camera, two IR lights, one temperature gauge, one EMF pump, one Phasma Box, and one laser grid pen.

Throughout our evening, we experienced sensations that would consider paranormal in nature. Changes in the composition of rooms as we toured, odd noises sounding like footsteps and the dragging of chains as we set up, and utilizing mainly the Phasma Box during our investigation, we captured plenty of voices and communication. During one scary moment on the second floor of the bridge shop, Cindy was actually scratched. We spotted shadows moving out of our peripheral vision and light anomalies flashing across cameras. We recorded a few names during our investigation and some communication throughout the building. In one of the more unique scenarios, we actually felt as though we were being mocked by getting the sounds and words we said aloud repeated back to us. The most active locations were the 2^nd floor of the bridge building, the Relic Room, the Field, and the Saw Shop. We received clear communication in all of these locations via the Phasma Box. We captured a few thermal images in the Relic Room of what appeared to be a growing energy, possibly that of an animal (we heard a bark of a dog as we photographed this). A light anomaly was recorded on the handheld video camera on the 2^nd floor of the bridge building. While investigating the Saw Shop next to the field, we recorded what sounded like a drum pounding followed by the command of “March.” During this occurrence, we simultaneously snapped a few photos of the field which produced a light anomaly in the middle of the field with no one in it and no light source to produce a reflection. While in the Field we captured what appeared to be some Rempod activity. However, we believe that the weather and wind was effecting our findings, setting the Rempod off sporadically. There was a few spots in the Roundhouse where we believe we followed a shadow but when we set up our equipment, the open door and the weather again altered our findings leading us to debunk this spot of Rempod activity.

 

 

During our time on the property, and even stretching a few days after, Derrick and Dan both had extreme dry mouth and were overly thirsty. Upon researching a little, it’s said that Civil War era spirits are sometimes associated with scents like lilacs as well as a bitter taste or dry mouth, all of which were associated with the final moments of those dying. The lilacs were scents of burial practices to make the scent of death not make those who survived constantly sick. The dry mouth is associated with those soldiers who were shot and dying. Supposedly their final requests were that of wanting a drink of water.

Below are the recordings, videos, pictures, and thermal images from our investigation at the Martinsburg Roundhouse. We labeled certain spots throughout of what we believe we received communication or paranormal evidence.  Once you listen to and watch the videos, reach out and let us know what you think.

2^nd Floor Bridge Shop

 The upper floor of the bridge shop is said to hold numerous spirits. One of the more predominant stories tells of a woman dressed in white, pacing in the corner and along the adjacent wall. It’s said that there used be shelves in that location, and perhaps she used to work there, or was a slave there. She may have been tasked with sorting and keeping tabs on the inventory and still does so in the afterlife. In the opposite corner of the floor, there is rumored to be a prostitute and two or three male spirits trapped here. The origin of this tale is unknown but being a popular stop back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, who’s to say what occurred in that area. This spirit seems to attract and pulls males toward her and seemingly pushes women away. Another common sighting is that of an entity up in the rafters. There is no particular story associated with this, but rather mediums, psychics, and sensitives tends to see and feel a strong presence above them.

 

 

In our first session, we sat near the woman in white along with her shelves and recorded an EVP session. We did not capture much aside from footsteps behind us in the opposite corner. Next, we conducted a Phasma Box session where we successfully captured phrases, names, were mimicked or mocked, heard laughter, screams, and toward the end of our session Cindy felt a stabbing sensation in her back. Right after this experience, we recorded a voice claiming that they “Warned her.”

 

Photos:

• As one of the investigators walked toward the far corner, an odd light anomaly was captured in a still photo.

 

 

• Once they walked back and returned to the group, a light streaked across the room, and this was also captured in another picture.

 

 

• A still from the video appears to catch what looks like a spider web and some strange lights passing through it, but there was nothing there to be touched.

 

 

• One of our investigators was scratched and following that incident, we captured voices that said “I warned you” and “Harm you.”

• At :02, we heard “Mr. Happy” in response to us asking if anyone is there?
• Laughter was heard at :13.
• After we asked who was laughing, we heard “That was you” at :23.
• As Derrick took a deep breath, it sounded like a voice was mimicking him at :27.
• “You disappear” was heard around :39 followed by “Go away” at :46.

• Right after we asked if there was someone in the rafters, we heard “Bolt of light” at :06 followed by what sounded like machine or mechanical noises at :15.

• “You should go” was heard at :01.
• We heard “Poor little thing” at :06, which oddly enough, is something Roger says often.
• The Ovilus produced the word “Cold” so we asked why they are using the word “Cold” and, at :30, we heard “My hands are cold.”
• We followed this by asking if they have been outside or if they work outside, to which we heard “Garden” at :59.

• We heard “Platform” at :02 as if in reference to the upper floor we’re on.
• After the word “Clap” appeared on the Ovilus, a clapping noise was heard at :19.

• We asked if they could come back and, at :28, we heard “Coming in.”

• As we tried to get the spirits to give us another sign, we asked if they could come forward to which we heard “Why should I?” at :02.
• As if pinpointing Cindy’s sensitivity, at :04, we heard “One of these are different.”

• Before the recording, Cindy felt a pain on her back which appeared to be a scratch.
• At :02, we captured “I warned her” as if relating to Cindy’s scratch.
• “Harm you” was heard at :07 which lead to laughter at :15.

Handheld Video 1:

• Since we had the stationary camera in this location, the only time we really utilized the handheld was when we split up and walked down toward the opposite corner.
• At about 2:22, we noticed an odd light configuration, at first, it actually looked like a spider web. However, as we moved closer, the light seemed to move and eventually completely disappear.
• Another light moved in front of the camera as we spun back toward the group right around 3:57.

Stationary Video 1:

• We placed this stationary camera toward the location where a woman is said to walk back and forth as if stocking or watching over the old (now nonexistent) shelves that once stood against that brick wall.
• After some silence and us setting up, at 12:07, “Kayla” appears on Ovilus.
• Movement in corner of room, off the camera, at about 14:07.
• “Hello” was heard at 14:47 followed by “Mr. Happy” at 15:34 in response to is anyone here?
• At 15:43, laughter was heard to which we asked who was laughing. “That was you” was captured at 15:53.
• As Derrick took a deep breath, there sounded to be a noise mimicking him at 15:57.
• We heard “You disappear” at 16:09 followed by “Go away” at 16:16.
• At 16:44, “You’ll find out” was heard in response to are we in your space?
• After we asked if they are in the room, at 17:35, we heard “We’re being sensed.”
• Laughter came through the Phasma Box at 17:48.
• After Cindy said it felt like a jolt of lightning, we heard “Thank you” at 18:08.
• A scream was heard at 18:57 followed by the statement of “You woke me up” at 19:18.
• After we mentioned that we were startled, we heard “I’m sorry” at 19:35.
• At 19:53, we captured “What then?”
• “Bolt of light” was heard at 21:31 after we asked if there’s something in the rafters.
• Machine noises were heard at 21:40.
• At 21:55, “Abby” appeared on Ovilus followed by “Please go” at 22:46.
• This sentiment was reiterated at 23:41 with a “You should go.”
• “Poor little thing,” a phrase Roger normally says, was heard at 23:47.
• After the Ovilus produced the word “Cold,” we asked why they are using the word cold. At 24:11, we heard “My hands are cold.”
• We followed up and asked if they were working outside to which we heard “Garden” at 24:40.
• The word “Platform” was captured at 24:55, possibly referencing the 2^nd floor we were on.
• At 25:12, after seeing the word “Clap” appear on the Ovilus, we heard a clapping noise after we asked if they could clap for us.
• “You can say that” was heard after we asked if this is a platform at 25:30.
• At 25:43, we heard “Shall we go?” followed by “That was close” at 25:50.
• “Coming in” was captured at 26:09 after we asked if they can come back in?
• More laughter was heard at 26:23.
• We asked if they can you come forward and heard “Why should I?” at 26:35.
• If referring to Cindy’s sensitivity, we heard “One of these are different” at 26:37.
• “It’s a joke” was captured at 27:32 after we asked if those are footsteps.
• At 27:53, we heard “I’m here” after we asked if they can come forward?
• We asked them to tell us their name and heard “Say hi” at 34:15.
• As Derrick stepped on Dan’s foot, we heard laughter at 34:36.
• “Shut up” was heard at 36:01 as we continued to pry for their name.
• At 36:59, we heard “We’re not doing that” after we said there’s some activity here.
• Derrick walked toward the corner, and at 37:40, we captured “Go on.”

Stationary Video 2:

• At :05, “Dan” was heard followed by “I’m coming” at :24.
• “Now is time” was recorded at 1:13 followed by “A servant” at 2:12.
• We heard “I wanna go home” at 3:12.
• A few residual sounding phrases came through beginning with “Cut” at 3:25, followed by “Safety” at 3:34.
• Right around 3:44, Cindy was scratched.
• Following that, we heard “I warned her” at 4:21 and “Harmed you” at 4:26.
• We heard laughter at 4:34 which is about the time we began to pack up.
• After we had left the area, we continued to hear some oddities beginning with inaudible voices at 16:24.
• Deep breathing was heard was heard at 21:50 and 21:58.
• What sounded like footsteps occurred at 25:45.
• A few loud banging noises were heard at 29:03, 30:13, 31:55, and finally at 33:46.

Stationary Video 3:

•  There wasn’t much going on in this video but at 6:27 we did hear a loud bang.
• At about 12:26, deep breathing could be heard.
• Another banging noise was heard at 20:55.
• Beginning around 21:40, we heard what sounded like machine noises last for about 30 seconds followed by voices around 22:20, all of which ended right before a real train flew past the building.
• At 30:00, we heard a bang as well as 30:45.
• Screams were heard at 36:38.
• A knocking was repeated at 38:10 and again at 38:15.

Stationary Video 4:

•  There was a knock recorded at 1:27 and a different banging noise at 1:53.
• At 4:45, there were some noises that sounded like footsteps.
• A bang was repeated at 6:33 and at 6:55.
• A banging noise was heard at 13:58.
• A different sounding knock, almost like a cracking whip, was heard at 16:18.
• At 17:49, another banging noise occurred.
• A loud bang was repeated three times at 32:18, 33:19, and 34:05.
• At 35:29 and 37:26, light knocking sounds occurred.

Stationary Video 5:

•  A knocking noise was recorded at 1:14.
• The same knocking was repeated at 8:26.
• Around 21:17, a loud bang was heard.
• Another knocking noises was recorded three times in a row at 25:31, 25:36, and 25:44.
• There were two more final knocks that we recorded here at 31:58 and 37:15.

Roundhouse

In this location, when the facility was active, there would be a normal slew of activity. This is where the train locomotives would come to get rerouted in different locations and directions, including to the repair shop behind the building. Directly below the turn table, the original foundation of the first roundhouse was re-used and can even be walked on and explored. The feeling is electric, almost as if history is still alive there. In this humongous open room, lights have been known to go hay wire and shadows have been said to seen wondering throughout as if they are hurrying to get to their next job.

 

 

We believe that we experienced one of these shadows, even though we did not get any photographic or video evidence of it. As Derrick was photographing the inside of one of the passenger cars on display, Dan called for and began to follow who he thought was Derrick at the far end of the room walking through the door across the turn table. As Derrick heard his name being called, he appeared out of the train car, astonishing Dan and forcing him to do a double take. Even though we attempted an EVP and Rempod session here, we didn’t receive much evidence aside from that personal experience.

 

 

Photos:

• The normal flash photographs did not produce any paranormal evidence, but looking through the window using the thermal photos, it does appear as if someone was standing outside just watching us.

• As we were making our way through the Roundhouse, we noticed what appeared to be a figure in the doorway. We quickly set up the Rempod and began an EVP session.
• We didn’t capture much aside from some Rempod activity at :12 and 4:15 but we strongly believe that the wind picking up set it off.

• As the Rempod began to go off, we tried to debunk this as wind or breeze, which we did successfully. At :02, the Rempod was alerted but we also noticed a breeze at the same time coming from outside.

• The Rempod was alerted twice here, at :43 and at 1:23. Both times we managed to debunk this as a strong breeze blowing through the doorway.

Relic Room

 Not much is really known about this area aside from the fact that objects that have been recovered from the site have been stored here. One of the more common experiences in this room is that of a shadow figure which stands on the far corner, perhaps watching over some of these invaluable items.

 

 

We captured a few names here like “Sam,” “Grace,” and “Jane” as well as a few thermal photos which seem to capture some oddities. One of which can actually be seen almost growing throughout the frames, and after we realized it resembled an animal, we captured what sounded like a bark. Another image we captured is what appears to be a man standing stoically on his own in the corner of the room.

• Our regular flash photography didn’t capture anything out of the ordinary, but the thermal imaging captured what appeared to be a figure sitting at the desk in the room.

 

 

• There was another location, on the opposite side of the room that showed a thermal image of what appeared to be an animal, possibly a dog after hearing a bark.

Saw Shop

 This is an area that saw plenty of activity throughout a working day. Employees would typically find themselves there at one point or another and, during the Civil War, this location saw plenty of fighting which occurred on the other side of the field. This location is notable for the residual energy of past employees still conducting their day to day business, but some sensitives and mediums have a darker feeling about this spot. They typically do not like coming to this location alone and almost feel a pull here. It’s not really known what could be lurking in the shadows here or why this spot has become such a point of interest for this darkness. Perhaps something occurred here that is just unknown to the public and the energy still lives on way past the original occurrence.

 

 

We recorded different types of communication here. It’s possible that most of this is residual as we heard the sounds of working machinery here, but we also seemed to unearth some details of a young girl named Isabelle who may have disappeared in the woods after being injured. Perhaps this was a mistreated slave girl or even one who was injured in the fatal Irish Brigade incident. While exploring the far side of the building, nearest to the field behind it, we captured what sounded like a drumbeat followed by the command of “March!”

Open Field

 Across the field is where some of the Civil War encampments were laid out, and just beyond is where some of the fighting occurred. Surely there were deaths in this field as the area itself changed hands 37 times. Those battles surely led to bloodshed across the area. The field has been a location where fogs and smoke have been noticed, even to the passing car which would report seeing something burning in the open field as they drove by. Horse hooves and shouting have been recorded here in the dead of night as if battles still rage on.

 

 

As we conducted some Phasma Box and Rempod sessions here, we felt as if we weren’t welcome, as if we were outsiders to this location. We did record some choice words and words of disagreements while investigating here. At some points, we were actually pleaded for help by some unseen force.

• At about :12, the Rempod alerted. We immediately asked if it was the female, and if so, if a nurse could step forward and turn it on again. At 1:06, the Rempod went off again.
• It continued to go off so we asked it to stop to which we heard “Bitch” at 1:33.
• At 2:14 the Rempod went off and we heard the word “Light” at 2:16.
• “We need help” was captured at 2:18 followed by the Rempod turning on and the word “Light” being heard again at 2:35.
• At 3:07, the word “Help” was recorded.
• We asked if they died here, and at 3:29, we heard “She knows.”
• “It’s passed due” was captured at 3:35.
• The Rempod went off after we asked if they were attacked there at 4:05.
• Some odd residual phrases seemed to be captured such as “I had a knife” at 5:27 and “Train tracks” at 5:35.
• We asked if they could step forward to which we heard “Wish I could” at 6:08.
• At 7:44, “Spite” was heard followed by “Play songs” at 8:00.

Machine Shop

 This room located off of the rear large open space where we set up our main console, is filled with old machinery still on display. This area leads directly to the Saw Shop, so it’s no doubt that this spot saw its fair share of activity when the roundhouse was still in operation, even if just for employees to pass through in each direction. Rumor has told of shadows being seen wondering back here and the machines sounding as if they are still functioning.

 

 

We simply conducted an EVP session here, even though the area had made us uneasy earlier in the evening while setting up and passing through, the environment seemingly altered by the time we made it there to investigate. We did not capture anything out of the ordinary, however, we did spot some fast moving lights in the far corner as if something was hiding behind the machine and randomly peering out looking at us.

• At this point we walked through the Machine Room and outside behind the Roundhouse itself. Still, we never caught anything paranormal here.

After we reviewed the evidence gathered from our paranormal investigation of the Martinsburg Roundhouse, we confidently conclude that the historic rail yard is host to many spirits throughout the property. While some of the more popular stories fell by the wayside such as the smoke, fog, and the horse hoof noises others came through in spectacular fashion giving us voices, names, and communication in different areas specifically the 2^nd floor of the bridge building, the Relic Room, the Field, and the Saw Shop.

 

 

These active locations in the Martinsburg Roundhouse gave us an array of energies and atmospheric changes. The 2^nd floor of the Bridge Building felt heavier, add to it that Cindy was scratched here and we were told that she was “warned” it all added up to a darker feeling. Both the Field and the Saw Shop seemed tamer, but at the same time we felt unwanted and felt like we were some place we simply did not belong; like the past. These were both ripe with energies who tried to force us out but also shared residual experiences while we spent time there. The Relic Room seemed relatively peaceful and welcoming, whether it was what felt and sounded like a guard dog trusting us or the quiet soul left in the corner to watch over their historical artifacts in the afterlife. By the end of the night, it seemed like we had experienced the extent of the energy that the old rail yard had stored up. By the time we made it to the Machine Shop by the end of the night, almost all the activity ceased.

 

 

The activity at Martinsburg Roundhouse had reached back into time from the high points of the town’s boom before the Civil War to the bloody history of the Civil War and the overworked slaves during that time to the town’s rise from the literal ashes of the burnt down rail yard. There are so many different memories and activities that seem to be stuck here like the hard-working employees of Martinsburg and the fun-loving children and pets. The darkness also seems to be hidden here in the form of women of the night and possibly an abusive man (father, slave driver, etc.) who seeks shelter outside in the Saw Shop. The tragedy of the Civil War is seemingly on an endless loop, replaying the battles and bloodshed of that time period by marching across the open field and reliving their tragic ends. Regardless of the type of hauntings experienced, it’s safe to say that the Martinsburg Roundhouse is the home of some of the most interesting variety of spirits known to haunt a single location.
